Hi,

this is one more of "quick and dirty" lens tests and now it is about super telephoto Canon 1200mm FL f/11 on RED1.

Marketed June 1972
Original Price 160,000 yen
Lens Construction (group) 5
Lens Construction (element) 7
No. of Diaphragm Blades 8
Minimum Aperture 64
Closest Focusing Distance (m) 40
Maximum Magnifcation (x) 0.032
Filter Diameter (mm) 48
Maximum Diameter x Length (mm) 128 x 853
Weight (g) 6,200

At the beginning I have to say I'm not impressed with this lens at all.

It's so long and big that is almost impossible to control any smooth movement because you would need always two tripods and it's all not an ideal solution.

Also it's not so fast and even not sharp lens as I expected from Canon, also has a lot of CA in a smaller apertures.

The lens has such limited performance.

So for me the game is over.

I'm not taking it.

Hello Sanjin,

I take it that your shots were with the lens wide open (f11). I would have expected better results also. Telephoto lens are very supceptible to optical misalignments. If any of the elements are cocked in the barrel or if the different parts of the lens barrel are not true to each other degradation of the image happens rapidly. Do you have access to a different unit to compare this one to?

Hello Chuck,

those presented shots/pictures were @22 (York air condition outdoor unit or even more down (the bear cans).

I see the problem in that because the lens consists two parts, you have to put them together on a location,

then you would need a second support/tropod to avoid a vibration visible on that focal distance

and at the end you get a wind that shaking all a little bit.

That "a little bit" grows in a big vibration when you woud like to make a movie in 4K.

So if you don't have all the line very good fixed in that pretty long lens then your are totally screwed with that in getting good pictures.

Sorry but I could not make it now.

Hi Sanjin,

how did you get the beer cans there for test purposes ;-)

martin

Rumor has he got them up there by standing on the bed of the floozy who lives in the apartment across the way and reaching out thru the skylight. lol
Although that might just be a rumor.

I think it was a party last weekend at this across the street loft apartment and some of the guests left them there.

Sigma 50-500mm (+2x extender = 100-1000mm) "quick and dirty" test is coming soon here.

Stay tuned.
