Cannot open R3d files on Intel

I'm probably just doing something totally wrong here, but I haven't gotten a single R3D file to open in anything. I've tried RedCine (goes to the opening screen and then vanishes with with an Apple error "The application RedCine quit unexpectedly") and RedAlert opens but vanishes when I select an R3D file from my hard drive.

Is there anything specific about where I place the R3d file to make it open? Is this a common error or has a codec on my system not been installed properly? I installed the FCS/Quicktime components and also Redline (I thought) but nothing seems to respond.

I'm on a:
2X3GHz Dual Core Intel with 5GB Ram
OS 10.4.11
QT Player says its v7.3.1

Thanks

Try running Repair permissions from Disc Utility - that might sort it out.

Both apps are installed in your Applications folder or elsewhere ?

Doh!

It's an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (256mb ram). I also have a Kona LHe card.

I did repair permissions but I'm still getting both errors.

Thanks for the fast replies. Any other ideas?

I have to say it's quite irritating that the software is so finiky depending on the platform and card that you have. I certainly hope that the final version works better on both ATI and NVIDIA.

The file that I got is from RedRelay (I don't have one of my own yet but will this summer). it can be found here: http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0232/

It's the Martial Arts Medium clip.

I got another clip to open in Red Alert, but Red Cine still doesn't get past the boot up screen for me.

Try a total reinstall of RedCine.

Trash the app and the folder found here - Boot drive/Library/REDCINE.

Dl a fresh copy and try again.

Yeah, I just did that and now RedCine seems to be working just fine with both of the R3D clips that I've downloaded.

Now the question becomes which program is best when shooting to export with for editing? RedCine or Red Alert?

Any thoughts? Does one maintain TC better than the other? I suppose with Red Cine you can burn in the TC and then do a visual matchback later. (Which for me being so ridiculously indie that the time used there wouldn't bother me but I know wouldn't be good for most everyone else I know).

Also, why don't they support DV NTSC? I bet there are a lot of people out there who'd like to work on their old machines and just do all their dumping and transfering of files on some one else's high end machine, then output to something crummy (like DV NTSC) to do picture cut, then go to a suite or post house to do the online. Thoughts?

Thanks for all your replies. This board is freaking sweat!

This board is freaking sweet!

Tftfy

Bear in mind that RedCine is a work in progress - for what you might be wanting (offline then online) you'd likely use RedAlert to generate the QT proxy files which then can be used in fcp.

Hey Will -

If you want to work in DV (or any other lower quality codec) then you can SKIP Red Alert and REDCINE. Use take the QT wrappers that the camera makes (you can also create new ones with different color settings using Red Alert) and just drop them into compressor. (And obviously, in compressor you can create custom setting for aspect ratio cropping or letterbox, TC, etc.)

Yes, do a fresh install. Make sure you trash previous version as Robbo mentioned.

Steve

Edit: oh, problem solved.

Hi there,

When you are loading r3d files do you have the .mov qt references in the same folder? This could be your problem as this has been an issue in the past. Plus what build are you running?

Randy

Does no one read threads anymore ?

William has fixed his problem.

edit: and if someone asks, "Who is William ?" I'm heading for the Scotch, which is a bloody good idea ... <cheers>

Again, the build I don't know as I didn't shoot the footage. I don't have the QT references. The Clip is here: http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0232/ under the name Martial Arts Medium.

It opens in Red Cine fine but Red Alert just disappears with out a trace when I open the R3D file.

Thanks, Mark! I'm going to be doing that from no on. The only problem is I'll need to get some camera generated QT's to try that as what I've gotten is only the R3D file.

Is there a place that I could get some of those? Would it lose it's file association if the reference QT is downloaded but still in the same folder as the R3D?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I halfway know the work flow when my camera shows up.
