  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cannon 5d Image evaluation...

I keep hearing firmware updates are on the way to correct this sorta stuff(and add 24p) though I wonder if it's in the sensor or in the codec. The latter is definitely fixable with firmware, the former is not. I wasn't expecting them to hit it out of the park with this camera to be honest. But it's the tip of the iceberg with what they could do on the next one... hopefully learning from this.

Oh I think the next one will be much better. (Maybe not though. We all know how Canon can be with releases.) But the overall look I don't think could be fixed with firmware. (Frames rates could of course) The line skipping Canon is doing to grab the frame of video is what is creating the loss of detail, aliasing and moire. Not to mention not having full manual control of the Iso and shutter. Even the iris has to be tricked into what you want. (Depending on lens.) Don't get me wrong though, this would be a fun camera to just play with. I feel for almost the same money I can avoid all those issues with a Scarlet and get even more capabilities for my money.

This all my 2 cents take it as you may. :)

The line-skipping is the problem and will not be fixed.

I think the line-skipping is to allow Canon to read from the sensor faster. If they are doing 30fps reading 1 third of the lines, does that make it really a 10fps sensor?

I love it when people think they've found a $3,000 piece of equipment that does the same thing as a $30,000 piece of equipment. I've done it myself a hundred times in the past twenty years and am still often tempted to fall for the trap.

Notice how the iPhone was actually more expensive than all other phones?

It's like people think the margins on technology are 80% and someone is finally cutting their huge margins.

Except that Red One costs 10% - 20% of what a Sony F35 costs....

Touché Tom. I guess I walked right into that one. However, I think even you'll agree that there are some advantages to an F35 out-of-the-box and in terms of work flow for most non-film projects. Also, The Red One is a major shift in technology from the F35 which does occur from time to time at massive cost savings and we really have no idea how much Mr. Jannard is underwriting our savings. For all we know, our Red One's may have cost $100,000 each to produce all costs in and all units shipped through today.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if each R1 cost $100K to make. You're right about that.

Generally, some products do come along from time to time that are ridiculous bargains. They leapfrog generations of technology. It is rare, but sometimes, it happens, I think.

I'm sure that they're not making much of a profit on each camera, especially rolling in the start up costs and r&d but components wise it's I kinda doubt it's anywhere near $100K.

What crazy humbug is this?

Red would have made a 350 Million dollar loss on the Red One.

Jim is not stupid.

He's not stupid but he's a billionaire who knows the value of R&D. Realistically, I would not be surprised if each R1 cost $40K to make.

My apologies for posting in the wrong thread. Thanks Mods for moving it.
