Hi all,

On my Epic-X Stage 3 RED ONE trade-in notice it says .....

"[TABLE="width: 100%"]
[TR]
[TD="align: left"]Note: Please be sure to contact your local Customs department regarding rules and regulations in order to avoid any customs delays. RED will not be held responsible for any delays, or additional charges due to Customs clearance.

"

I was just going to take it to FedEx and ship it. Have any of you had to deal with Customs? What procedure has been successful for shipping to RED from Toronto?
What would cause a Customs delay?

thanks,

Hi George, we used FedEx and had no issues, other than an unexpected charge (US$420 that FedEx charges RED, which you have to cover as part of your return). This charge is something that all returned cameras are subject to when shipped cross border to RED - I was told this by RED's shipping department, so not much one can do it seems . Cost to ship camera CA$280 + insurance CA$620 = $900 + $420... $1320, crazy but seems what it is. If you have the time, jump on a plane for $320 return...

Hope that helps.

Thanks Shaun, did you get your Epic-X yet (which stage)? How much duty did you have to pay? What was it valued at?

Never heard of this $420 either...I'd like to know what grounds FedEx had to slap an additional $420 on the shipment.

Also, if your camera is insured with an all risk policy that covers transit, then you don't have to pay the insurance either (but double-check this with your insurer).

Insurance company does not cover this particular situation as the camera is not coming back. If the camera were coming back, sure.

No duties were charged coming in, only regular taxes on the full Epic package as it appears from RED, not the discounted figure (so R1 trade-in).

This was a stage 3 camera George.

That $420 charge I mentioned above was a "standard" FedEx duty charge according to RED shipping department for camera's being shipped to Red from outside the USA. They said there was nothing that could be done about this by RED or ourselves. I would definitely like to hear other Canadian stage 3 folk chime in here about this $420 charge that appeared as "R1MDT" on the invoice from RED. Has anyone not had FedEx slap this duty on RED?

I just came back from Fedex office here in Vancouver BC Canada. I checked w/ Fedex on the shipping cost to send my R1s to Red.

What they said to ship one camera from Vancouver to Irvine, CA:

Option 1 - Ground costs $374 (insured at full value - $17,500) Note: most of the cost is the insurance. The Fedex rep warned me that there will be broker charges at the border. I asked how much will broker charge will cost and he said anything over $1000 is $43 flat.

Option 2 - Economy air - price including insurance is approx $750 and no brokerage fee

I never ever heard of a $420 charge listed as R1MDT before. If this is the case, I'm going to drive to CA with my two R1s myself.

FYI- If you have equipment insurance, it typically covers "in-transit"...so no need to insure the camera for more than the insurance deductible. That should save a bunch.

I'm confused as to why free trade would only work one way... I mean what does the camera not coming back have to do with anything? Also, how could there possible be brokerage fees for it when no one is actually "buying" the R1 that is being sent back?

well technically, you are selling it for $17,500.

How about putting on the paper : sending back for repair ?

No you're not; unless you're claiming to be buying the Epic for $17,000 when that comes through customs (which wouldn't be good for insurance purposes). What you're suggesting is to essential pay duties/customs for the $34,500 of the Epic PLUS the duties/customs fees of the $17,500 of the R1... as in, you're paying twice for the same $17,500 (once when the R1 goes down, and then again when you claim the full $34,500 amount of the Epic on the way up). It's not a sale, it's more of a "gift". The Epic purchase is the only sale in the transaction (and should be claimed at full $34,500 value, rather than just the $17,000 you're actually paying for it, to ensure full insurance coverage during shipping).

I'm seriously kind of confused about this... it doesn't make sense that it would cost more than just the shipping + insurance with NAFTA.

well, you are incorrect. You are trading in the Red One for $17,500. And getting one hell of a discount on the Epic. How much are you paying Red?

And this has nothing to do with insurance, you should insure the camera for its replacement value, which is $43k

I was going by body-only price of Epic-X ($34,500) as I have not brushed up on the stages, but the logic still stands (which is why it's bugging me).

Aside from shipping and shipping insurance (if your cam insurance doesn't cover travel), there should be no additional fees (expect 5% when the epic comes across the Canadian border.) Otherwise, you're paying twice for the same $17,500, which is bogus. In other words, when the Epic crosses, are you claiming that it is only $25,500 (43k - 17.5k)? Probably not, but you should be since that's all you're paying for it (of course by doing so, you'd only be able to get transit insurance for $25,500 instead of the $43k it actually costs... not good).

More over, no money is exchanging hands with the trade, so why would you be inclined to considered it a sale when that's only going to cost you more money going across the border? Come to think of it, why would anyone claim it as a sale when it wouldn't affect insurance or shipping (other than costing you duties and customs fees) by doing so?

You will get dinged for an import fee for the Red One travelling back into the USA. It showed up on our invoice along with $1000 to repair a couple things on the camera. There should be no duty on the Epic coming back, but yea it looks like the commercial invoice will have the full value of the Epic which mena syou are paying 12% on that in HST.

We all live near the border. It is often a worth while thing to just cross over (legally, declaring what you are doing) yourself and avoid surprises. Shipping itself will be much cheaper - you might cleat $800 for a 2 hour drive
