  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can you use only HD-SDI out and see the menus?

Hey,

About to purchase a scarlet dragon and just checking a few things.

I don't really want to shell out 2.5k for a monitor so my plan is to get a decent third party HD-SDi monitor and use that as my primary monitor.

Will I able to see the menus at 1080p on an hdsdi monitor? And will I still be able to use another monitor via the hdmi output? I'm finding conflicting information on the internet so any light on this matter is appreciated.

Lastly i plan on getting a pass through monitor so I can always have a third monitor sent off to the director. Could this create and issue with the menus? Ideally I want to be able see everything g you would normally see on a standard red monitor.

Thanks!

I run a SmallHD DP6 through SDI, and set a function on my side handle to change the video sent via SDI between video preview and the preview with embedded menu system. While running this monitor, I also use HDMI from the brain to a wireless transmitter - sending video off to a HD monitor that's out of the way. I've set up a secondary side handle button to flip between the two video previews (clean and with menus) as well. All while still having my RED monitor plugged in.

There should be no reason why you'd have an issue with your interest in setup. The pass-through should definitely work as long as the monitor's output [resolution] is able to be accepted by whatever additional monitor you're heading to. The only problem here is that HDMI cables sometimes don't like staying put, if that's the way you were thinking.

Yes, you can place the menus on the HDSDI monitor and navigate them using either the Side Handle, Switchblade, or REDMOTE. By default the HDSDI monitor is set to "Clean" mode (so there will be no menus). You will need to change its mode to "Overlay". This can be done in several ways:

Using a touch LCD temporarily to do the setup:
- Go to: Menu > Settings > Display > Monitor Control (Monitor tab)
- Select "BRAIN HDSDI" from the pull-down list
- Change the Mode to "Overlay"
- Close the Dialog
- Remove the touch LCD - menus should appear on your HDSDI
Note: If you also using both HDSDI and HDMI monitors you can chose which one is the "control surface" by Adjusting the monitor priority list in Menu > Settings > Display > Monitor Control (Priority tab). The highest detected monitor on the list that is set to "Overlay" mode will be your control surface. Be careful though, because we cannot detect if HDSDI monitors are attach or not (so we assume they are). This means, if you set BRAIN HDSDI to the highest priority and don't have an HDSDI monitor plugged in, menus will still be on the HDSDI port (and will not go to the next highest priority monitor).

Using the REDMOTE:
- Change the REDMOTE mode to 'local' (press the button labeled 2)
- Change to page 8 (press the button labeled 8)
- Navigate to the HDSDI Mode slot and change it to 'Overlay'

If you don't have a touch LCD or REDMOTE you can also do it with a "force preset", that is a preset file that is automatically applied on boot from media
- Download the DSMC ToolKit (from this page: https://www.red.com/downloads?category=Other&release=final)
- Follow the included instructions

Great answers! Thanks so much, completely cleared it all up. I will be getting a 1080 pass through monitor now. People seem to rate the small HD monitors so I might get one of them and then use an hdmi splitter if I need three monitors instead of a pass through monitor.

Thanks!

I am undecided between the Battle Tested Red Pro 7" LCD
or the SmallHD OLED HDSDI 7.7" http://www.flyonix.co.uk/product/smallhd-ac7-7-7-oled-hdmisdi/

Please help, I have no idea how good the quality of the Red monitor is but on paper the smallhd looks a lot better and is slightly cheaper. However the Red has only one cable which would be awesome. What would you guys pick? This is all on the presumption that battle-tested means nothing except better prices (high hopes).

Thanks

The SmallHD AC7 has a much nicer image with respect to color and lack of banding. But yeah, you will need a power cable + SDI cable - but you can dress them nicely especially if you use thin BNC cables.

Thank you, I have made my mind up finally. I'm going to go with the Smallhd. The last thing to do now is to figure out exactly what cables to use. A simple BNC cable will work just like an HD-SDI cable right? No adapters needed?

As for power, wow, I'm newer to this game than I thought. Its amazing how little you know till you start to buy your own kit. So the Small hd has a Hirose connector I believe and I'm guessing I need to use the Jetpack for Epic/Scarlet to power the camera and accessories and that has both D-Tap and Lemo connectors. So Lemo connectors come with different numbers of pins. Do you know what cable I need to connect the two. I'm guessing a Hirose to 4-pin LEMO but they are all 3feet long which seems a fair bit too long.

I have found only one cable that is 1 foot long. (possibly too small now lol) Its this http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/hawk-woods_la-74 I'm guessing that wont work as its missing two pins so not compatible. I'm a bit lost. I'm probably just going to get the 3 foot cable and hope I can tuck it away.
