Just got our red in, love the images.. some big sound issues...
On mic inputs, on any channel, there is major hum or hiss.
oddly, we can't get any level with our battery powered senn 416 on mic, but as soon as we plug in a lav (wired or wireless) we get decent levels on mic (plus some minor hum which greatly increases when you boost the level). on line, there was some levels with the 416.. but very very low/unusable..
with the lavs on line level, the signal is pretty clean, but the level is uncontrollable/lower than i'd prefer.
phantom introduces insane buzz/hiss.
we're using the RED mini xlr to xlr cables.. i'm assuming these are the padded ones..
on a shoot last week, our sound mixer was forced to send line level from his mixer to the camera. since he wasn't recording to a hard disk recorder he said he was kind of crippled by being forced to send line to camera.. and also the line level input was apparently too hot.. forcing him to ride the levels kind of low..
in the end we have good audio.. but what are we missing here?
my ideal for this would be mics->mixer->hard disk recorder-> line level signal to camera
which i believe is what sound device's report recommended..
i'm pushing for us to go double system in the future.. but i'm not really at the top of the decision tree..
