  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CAN USE SCARLET WITH TASCAM DR-100?

As long as you have the DR-100 configured to supply phantom power, having the mic connected to the recorder, and the recorder connected to the Scarlet would work fine.

It would look like this:
Sennheiser MKH-60 ----- XLR Cable ----- Tascam DR-100 (Headphone Out) ----- 3.5mm Mini Connector ----- Scarlet (Audio In)

Do you mean to use the DR100 as an external audio monitor, as opposed to recording audio as part of a double system?

The best quality is recorded onto the Tascam, but for syncing purposes, it's good to have a cable run out from the mini jack output of the Tascam to the Scarlet. My only questions is about the impedance, I'm not familiar with the internal audio settings of the Scarlet X.

I've been considering using a Sound Devices Pix220 or Pix240 as my audio as well as prores recorder.
- xlr in
- sounddevices preamps

You could monitor audio from the headphone out on either the DR-100 or the Scarlet. You have a line going from the DR-100 to the Scarlet, so they're both receiving the same audio. You could also have the DR-100 record so that you'd have a backup of the audio.

Thanks enrique and Brian, that makes sense. My first instance was to keep both the external audio recording system physically separate from the camera and then sync it all up later, to allow some flexibility for mic placement and reduce clutter on set. I was thinking to perhaps attach a small cheap mic to the Scarlet and record at the lowest audio setting (mainly to save on space really) to aid in syncing later.

I haven't actually put my mind to what audio settings are available on the Scarlet, come to think of it.

For those of us (like me) who don't speak Spanish, this is what he's saying:

Sorry it was pointed out that the OP was from the Dominican Republic.

I can see however that I was nowhere near strident enough.

The internal recording with the Scarlet and Epic cameras is pretty damn good.

Using a cheap external recorder, like the Tascam DR100 or Zoom H4N, is just stupid with Epic or Scarlet.

The audio quality is lower, and you have to sync sound. Absolutely not worth the effort or expense.

If you do use an external recorder for second system sound you have to raise your game significantly to make it worthwhile. That's why I pointed you at the 788T as an example.

You absolutely need high quality preamps and timecode i/o, including the ability for the recorder to act as a master clock.

If you don't step up to that level of equipment, you are wasting money and time (both on set and in post) for no gain.

So ... while you could use a Tascam DR100, don't waste your time or money.
