  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can the Weapon lens mount power the Fujinon Cabrio lens?

As the thread title states... Will it?

I own the 19-90 Fujinon Cabrio and I use it for a lot of automotive work. The reason we use this lens is because it is very sharp (the second generation lens), it covers 6KHD, and it has full metadata which we use heavily for CG work.

Personally I don't use the lens' handgrip (although I like the idea of it for hand-held work), however I have to keep it attached and run a power cable to it, just to allow the lens to send metadata to my Epic Dragon. Although the data is sent through the lens mount, the Epic wasn't designed to supply enough power through the lens mount to power a lens like this without an additional power cable. But a lot of other cameras do... F5, F55, Alexa, and more.

Just thought this would be a good time to bring it up and wished I'd though of this when weapon was first announced. Hopefully Red did.

Two other (unrelated) wishes for Weapon:
- 4K HDMI output
- 4K prores internal recording

I asked the same question during the NAB window, but it was never answered. I went for the CF 8K anyway, but sure hope it can power the metadata feature natively.

I've been trying to get Red to support LDS since 2008. It's not a problem technically. It's politics.

I have a full set of LDS Ultrprimes if you are interested :)

I think there must be a way through the politics of it... for example:

Red suggest a way to the community to help the guys with LDS lenses
Red don't offer LDS as standard they create a new Ti LDS PL mount and charge an extra $500-1000 (I am happy to commit to a deposit to help)
This wil surely produce some cash to pay for extra dev and licence issues?
It then is not in Arri's interest to refuse help as the will piss of people (like me) who have spent a lot of money with them..

Why not? I agree with the current inter company suspicions it is porbably dificult for Red to just do the dev for free but LDS lenses are integral to the industary and Red cameras will benefit from the support...

hopefully!?

On my film that I just wrapped (Cooke S4i primes) the lens metadata was very important to the WETA VFX team. Working with both Keslow and Red we are, at present, about 80% there with getting all the metadata recorded onto the r3d and then also ported over to the transcoded OpenEXR (script written by Modern Video)

Hopefully this means progress towards more R&D

If Red can open its Weapon hardware to third party development, I don't see why it can't publish API's that would allow third party developers to write whatever code necessary to present Arri lens data as metadata to the camera. But of course Red would need to provide the contact pins on the mount because they are in a different position than i/data. So then you have to ask why Red wouldn't just do it themselves.

There was a lawsuit between Arri and Red a few years back but I don't recall how it was settled. So that could be why nothing's progressed...although there were a number of red users pushing for LDS before that time and nothing came of it.

Sure would be nice to have LDS supported. Let's hope it happens someday.

hey Mark you asked this one back in 2008

LDS protocol is not an open system and does not send exactly the same data as the I/system as I think you are saying you were told.... but the good news is we heard your requests and there has been discussion.... We've always liked ARRI.

No promises, and /i will come first, but we are listening.

Mark.. We will see what we can do with LDS, ok? I have already said that. No need to keep bringing it up.

And I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but ultimately Joel did bring up a good point, If you (or anyone) really don't like how our camera works, you don't need to buy it....

nothing has changed since then

i agree LDS could do nothing but help though? like screw arri just do it for us guys shooting on cookes n reds lol? cookes rock bro, just LDS them at least haha...

Wow, that was a blast from the past.. ;) Ironically, I'm now wanting to buy a Cabrio, but need to sell my LDS Ultras because I bought a set of Leica Summicrons to compliment my Lecia R's and I don't need that many primes!

Miss those passionate days in 2008 when this all began.

Thanks Jarred and Jim! It's been a fun ride.

Oh, I'm still waiting for LDS... for the community :)

The Weapon PL mount can not power the Fujinon Cabrio drives. But when the lens is powered by an external cable into the 20p Hirose connector on the grip, the mount will communicate with the lens FIZ data as well as the VTR switch which can be mapped like any other key in the camera. I believe the default mapping is to toggle record. IIRC Fuji sells power cables with I dtap or 4p XLR. And Element Technica has a 2p lemo power cable.

You will need to disable lens power in the lens setting menu on the camera.

I really appreciate the reply Dave. It's a bummer that the lens mount on the weapon cannot power the Cabrio, but I had assumed that was the case... just wishful thinking for me I guess. I do have a power cable and will continue using the lens with the cable when I upgrade. Thank you!

Thanks of the note Dave, I had not seen this until today. Guess I just have to track down the correct power cable to go from the 20pin Hirose to the proper Lemo on whichever expander I get. Having the option of D-tap is nice, but would prefer a more solid connector for reliability in the field. Like Jeffery it is not the answer I was hoping for, but it's quite helpful to know what to expect.
