Hi, we've got a flustered crew with our camera rented on location - claiming playback errors? This is something we've never experienced in nearly 2years of use and I think they maybe getting confused. So can anyone confirm that you can get a playback error with the words "playback error" on the camera.

Thanks,

It's rare, but yes you could. Call in to RED tech support to discuss (and send an error LOG file)

pretty sure I've gotten these many times. Generally when you sort of overload the system for instance by fast forwarding a clip at highest speed and then hitting play or hitting rewind on it etc seems to overload it sometimes (especially true when you have shot a lot of clips in the drive) and it gives a weird playback error. But it seems to be inocuous as you can then just hit play again and all seems fine

clips not playing back from camera are NOT rare in my experience, or most DPs I meet, but also not indicative of corrupt footage luckily. Some clips play, others don't. skip back a clip or two and playback is ok. in my experience, once a clip says it won't play, it won't play (until it hits redcine etc). lets keep it real.. rare indeed, more like daily. But most clips do play though. Do you shoot a lot Stuart?

My camera is also out on the same job, and yes Tyrone, the message "playback error" actually comes up on the lcd ;) I've probably seem four or five different error messages over the years, including "codec error" (reds used to struggle with the yorkshire landscape), "playback error" (i suspect its a firmware bug), and my favourite "unknown i/o error etc" (something like that, can't remember exactly..the last one is actually rare, drive cable related I believe).. can't remember most. "playback error" used to be rare, started occuring around build21, if I remember correctly, as did the cameras ability to sometimes get stuck in 1:1 mode. Rare before that build IME

If you are seeing this as a daily occurrence, then you should definitely contact RED tech support and send them a camera LOG file.

Then why do DPs tell me they see this a lot on different cameras, and why aren't they worried when they do? Also, all the threads that have mentioned this problem?

sure, ill send a log file
