Hi

I try to work on a project shooting in 4k-HD (3840x2160). When I take The proxy-files ( "H" which has the size 1080P) into FCP, they can be played a little bit in the timeline ( Orange timeline ). When I use proxy-size "M" (960x540) or "P" the timeline turns red and everything has to be rendered. Now I don´t have the possibility to change the settings, RT or Unlimited and playback qualities.

What can I do, to have the possibility to work with the "M"- proxies directly so I have realtime playback in FCP?

Best regards

I found a solution. The sequence settings has to be " REDCODE" instead of "Apple Prores".

FYI, in my experience FCP does not like the non-normal frame sizes. If you use any of the standard sizes (720x480, 1280x720 or 1920x1080) FCP is much happier and we never get the red bar. Yes the footage would be scaled, but I accept that to get the "realtime"

Your compressor should be Prores though as redcode will not render in my experiences.

good luck

In my experience you should never set the sequence to Redcode. It will crash frequently when rendering.

Hi Nomad

I ´m only doing an offline edit in clean cuts, so I don´t have to render the timeline.
When I go into the online edit I will render the footage. Have you experienced
crashes if you change the sequense from Redcode to Apple-Prores and then render?

Cheers

No, that's fine. But you should switch off auto-rendering as long as you stay in Redcode…

This is an irony that Red created the 4kHD mode so that the proxies could be worked with in a standard HD format, but that 'half HD' (ie 960x540) is not what FCP considers to be a standard resolution, acceptable for RT.

I'm sure it would take a simple point update from Apple to add 960x540 as an acceptable RT format. Maybe somebody (either from Red or not) with contacts in the Apple Pro Apps division could request they add that into the next FCP update.
