  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I apologize if this has been asked before. I don't usually visit this part of the forum too often.

I'm preparing to buy a new Mac Pro and I need a decent computer monitor to go with it. This computer monitor will be used to edit Red footage on FCP6 and graded in Apple Color. I don't wish to spend too much money. I just want to have something that's 1920 x 1200 resolution, able to display 1080p and edit the Red proxy footage on resolutions lower than the original 4K, 3K, or 2K red footage. Again, I'm looking for a computer monitor that is not too expensive, but has good performance. In other words, I want a computer monitor that has a great price to performance ratio.

Matrox MXO turns your Apple Cinema Display or other DVI monitor into an artifact-free, true-color video display you can trust, even for color grading. It’s packed with features that make it the ideal monitoring solution for Final Cut Pro, Apple Color, Adobe After Effects, and other QuickTime-based applications. You won’t need to buy expensive HD monitoring equipment or the SDI-to-DVI converter required for preview with some I/O cards. In addition, MXO’s realtime downscaling feature also lets you view your HD projects on an SD monitor.

These are the monitors tested to work with that solution:

For serious color grading a Cinema Display is practically useless. No converter box can change the black level of the panel or the viewing angle.

TFT's are extremely tricky for color accurate work. There are models that are acceptable (to some...) but I'd say the Cinema Display or any other model in that price range isn't one of them.

EZIO if it's color critical. Apple, Dell, or HP if you just want something solid and mid-range. Hanns-G if you just need something cheap but decent.
