  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can someone explain to me how the IMS mount will work?

Hi all. . .

I'm intrigued by the P+S IMS mounting system, but it depends upon how easy it will really work.

As I understand it, the IMS mount will allow us to use lenses from many makers, from Leica to Nikon to PL to Canon and beyond. (Yes, I know, PL isn't a maker, but that's beside the point.)

BUT, there is this matter of the shims and collimation. Will switching from a Nikon prime to a Leica Noctilux be as easy using the IMS as it is currently moving from one Nikon prime to another using my Underdahl mount? Or is there a lot of work involved in moving from one mounting system to the other? That is, does moving from one mount to another involve recollimating the camera each and every time?

I'm more interested in quick, ease of use than I am in having the widest possible selection of possibilities, but if that wide selection AND ease of use come in the same package, then I'm all aboard the Marakesh Express.

Thanks very much.

Stephen

No need of recollimating the camera each and every time.

You collimate once for a longer time.

It's like with any other 35/16 mm film camera.

Soooooooo. . . if it is as easy to use as RED's PL mount and RED's Nikon mount, why wouldn't anyone want to move to the IMS mounting system?

I'm definitely interested. . .

Switching form Red Pl to Red Nikon mount is not easy at all an is a lot time consuming basically is not practical when on set.

The IMS is way much more easy to use.
Joust select the lens you like (most of the brands are supported) attach the correct adapter to the lens and connect it to the IMS.
No screwdriver involved in the process. Fast easy and SAFE.

Michele,

That's it.

Exactly like you wrote.

I'm sold. Is thing shipping???? Does it void my warranty? (I've read very conflicting things about this!)

Perhaps the best feature of the IMS, at least for me, is the future availability of an optical viewfinder.

Get an IMS, an Impero and an Inclino and you're all set!

Already ordered the Impero and the Inclino. . .

:-)

Now I'm thinking about the IMS. But that warranty issue is troubling. . . at least for now.

Maybe they'll get it all figured out in the end.

You dont have long left on your warranty anyway right?
Just go for it!
Ive given up on Birger and am now going Nikon
IMS would be great for future to be able to switch between Nikon F, PL, FD and B4(is that also available??)
I am not too interested anymore in complex knobs, wireless hoohaa, just want two or three rings on my lens, focus (internal ofcourse), zoom (if a zoomer) and aperture. Ive moved away from the idea of EF lens just because of the lack of aperture and for now the cost of EF lenses.
The Red is complicated enough as a modular camera, since i need the simplest rig possible and lightest for my work, which will require me lugging a backpack and tripod around forests or sitting still for long hours on my own in a small tent etc.
Ive even dropped the lcd from my package, dont need it, never needed it before why lug it around.
What i would like someone to design is an external aperture ring for EF lenses that some how clips around the lens or on the camera mount that has the same kind of access as a bog standard aperture ring.
One day someone will, then ill buy it.
Did I mention I hate wires, so i dont want control unit wires dangling around, im already a bit worried about the connectors on the red.
We will see, I should Rx in the next weeks.
Ramble ended!!!

If you've ever used a P+S Mini 35 adapter, it's that easy, pop on a Nikon mount and mount your lens, then replace that mount with a PL mount and use that . There are no adjustments to be made. The flange focal depths have already been built into the different mounts.
BTW - The same lens mounts used on the mini 35 are what is used on the IMS, so if you find any on ebay - buy'em up, because they're going up in price as we speak. - maybe over $400. ea.

Actually, I have about six months left on that warranty for #791, and about 8 months left on #1256. I can't afford to kiss that off. But, no doubt about it, I'm very interested in the IMS system.

I'm all Nikons now, and I'll be using the View Factor, as well, for follow-focus and Actioncam work. I want the Birger to work out, and, indeed, I ordered it at the very end of the very first order period, but I'm like a lot of people in that I'm losing faith in their ability to get that device to us in a reasonably working format. If/when it comes out with wireless and operating knobs, I'll buy it. Until then, it will be my trusty Redrock Micro follow focus, my Nikon lenses, and Doug Underdahl's fabulous Nikon mounts.

:-)

Thanks guys for bringing this up. I had not heard about this IMS adapter until this thread. If there are no "gotchas" with it (such as needing constant backfocus adjustments for each change of adapter type), this is a great way to go.

Yes, it is shipping. Yes, it does void your warranty.

I wonder if the final version does invalidate the warranty. The previous design required a whole replacement camera front rather than just an adapter. This final version seems no more intrusive than Red's own Nikon mount. Anyone know for sure the warranty voiding applies to this new, less intrusive design?

Thanks Mizael. Hmm... it appears that the IMS system, even for the PL mount, does not connect the i/tech data to Red/Cooke lenses. Since I want to mix and match my Red lens with my Contax ones, that's a problem as I don't want to take (imminent) functionality away from my Red lens. Pity.
