We are looking into using a Red One for coverage on a NTSC TV show that is shot and broadcast interlaced. How would the R1 match the show's "video look"? Would we have to shoot at 60p and convert to 29.97fps (59.94i)?

Anyone here have a workflow for intercutting R1 footage with NTSC video?

I have done this successfully by setting the camera's time base to 29.97 which times 2 is 59.94. It records a progressive rather than interlaced image, but we have had this requirement on a few jobs with no issues.

You can experiment shoot 24P or 30P for testing to see what give you the most interlaced feel.

I imagine 30P at 29.97 time base will give you that video quality with the RED.

You would need to shoot 3K at 60P time base then drop it into a 59.94i timeline.

I just took a look at the menu maps and I see an option for shooting 59.94 at 3k. this might be what works best for us.....we'll see.

David B., my concern with shooting 29.97 is that it would not have the same smooth motion that is characteristic of NTSC 59.94i video. Were you able to accomplish this? We shoot with HDX900's at 59.97i and must maintain this same field rate with the R1.

Shooting anything but the 59.94P mode at 3K or below will make the footage stand out like a sore thumb from the 59.94i footage.

As much as it pains me to make a RED ONE look like a "news" camera (:D), this is the way to do it.

Ok, we'll have to shoot 3k.

My next concern is with converting 59.94p to 59.94i. I'm not a post guy so I'm clueless as to how FCP would handle this conversion process. Is it even necessary to convert the footage? Can I just drop it into the 59.94i timeline and be done with it?

Thanks for the tips guys!
