  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can I upgrade Epic Firmwar with DC power?

I have the older power from the R1 package. Got a 2b to 1b adapter but the power is DC. Say's I need the AC power adapter for the epic firmware 3.0. I know less about power than some on here, don't want to risk doing something silly. Hopefully a power wiz is up, thanks in advance for the advice.

Best,

I upgraded my Epic with battery power. The reason why Red claims that one should use DC is the fact that batteries can be empty, DC not. To make sure that no one has a power supply break-down they urge you to use DC. I used a fully loaded Red-Brick and it took me literally 2 minutes to upgrade the camera. It's a quick and convenient process, nonetheless you MUST NOT have any power supply issues.

In doubt, follow Red's advice.

They say AC not DC, that's my worry.

The thing to avoid is a power outage during the firmware install procedure as the camera may not come back on - hence the advice to use the a/c adapter as 'mains' voltage is generally more reliable. In some countries though, brown-outs and power cuts are frequent events (where I live the 'mains' voltage is often 50% of what it should be and we can have as many as a dozen power cuts a day) in which case a fully charged brick may be preferable.

You the man, thanks Martin.
AC = alternating currency; the AC adaptor converts the 115V/230V AC to somewhere around 12V DC. You'll be fine with the R1 adapter.

The firmware update from version 2 to 3 took me about 15 seconds.
I was actually shocked how fast that went compared to the follow up black shading process.

yeah the loud fan speed was a little alarming, that's all part of the upgrade.
