Have an imac i7 intel and plenty of hard drive space,I need to keep cost's down because i'm buying the Scarlet , need to know if I can get away with transcoding and editing footage in Final cut pro X and RED cine on a imac or do I really need to spend more money to edit?

Don't have a lot of experience yet, but working with i5 3.6 here, ATI HD 5670, and that's actually working pretty sweet. Can imagine it is nice to have a faster system, but this totally works and can't see why you wouldn't be able to use a like-spec'd system to edit and transcode.

EDIT: That's working and transcoding with redcine-x, 4k files. Working with the ProRes in FCP is no problem either of course.

Thank u Guys =)

Just wanted to make sure my Comp wouldn't blow up from all the awesomeness that is RED Thank u all =)

Just use Premiere Pro 5.5 no transcoding needed.

What I do for the moment (testing with footage from a RED One) is transcode everything to ProRes (Proxy) and edit in FCP 7. For the moment no colorcorrections. At night I let the computer transcode the R3D files (which are colorcorrected) to ProRes 422 HQ. If all transcoding and editing is done (the filenames of the Proxy and HQ files must be the same) I switch drives and FCP 7 will see the ProRes 422 HQ files and I can generate whatever I want and send it to Compressor.
PS : I am just testing my workflow on a MacBook Air Core2Duo 1.83 and MacBook Pro CoreDuo 2.16. I'm also waiting for RED Scarlet... so little time left over for testing...

I was a final cut editor for 4 1/2 years.

With EPIC footage, I'm editing on a MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM...realtime without transcoding with Adobe Production Premium. I bought it for $729. I couldn't be happier (unless I added RED Rocket to the picture). :)

TIP: don't edit EPIC footage on a 5K timeline(if you are finishing for a simple 1080p finish). You can bring those 5K files into a RED 1080p sequence, playback at 1/2 res without stuttering instead of having to work in a 5K environment and playback at 1/8th resolution.

Thanks Joseph this advice will benefit us all =) Also I tried using premiere pro can't seem to get used to it??? Been a final cut guy for 6yrs hard to adjust lol

Bart, you should be able to find some sample footage around here to download and test to make sure everything works the way you want. Good to get it all sorted out before the 3rd. ;-)

youll be perfectly fine with the imac i use mac pro 8core imac i7 and a macbook pro. i mostly shoot in 2k but ive edit 4k files with no prob without a redrocket honestly have done anyting in 5k yet. but with 4k you can cut your footage like butter

Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere Pro is a much easier and better migration for a FCP user than it is to FCPX.

Could you fill out your workflow a little bit for the boys and girls at home who want to know? ie What is your Macbookpro spec's and how much harddrive you use, how long does it all take etc. I remember you or maybe it was someone else mentioned they would use eventually a Thunderbolt connected drive? Could your workflow surfice for documentary work with larger amounts of footage?....

What workflow/software is the buttery editing done with on the i7 8core iMac. :)

I'm thinking this is the machine for me.

Sorry I'm asking a lot of seperate questions. But thinking aloud I'm looking at the Apple site and wondering if you could realistically edit on a Mac Mini. You can pimp out a 4GB version with i7 for around $1,000 dollars (on Apple Korea) which would be great IF its a viable option.

Thanks for sharing your experience Joseph. It's very helpful!
