  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone recommend a super low car towing dolly?

Hi all. . .

I'm looking for the lowest (to the ground) car dolly (front wheels only), as opposed to a car trailer. I want to pull this pup around town with cameras mounted on the exterior of the car with a minimum of height distortion from being up on the dolly. I am thinking of even putting some mini-spares on the front wheels to keep it level.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Stephen

The camera car company I've worked with has a tow dolly that has hydraulically adjustable ride heights, and the final bit of levelling is done by partially deflating the standard front tires.

In my experience, it worked perfectly for a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

BTW, I've worked with Jeeps on several shoots now, and I've got to say, I really appreciate the ability to remove the roof, remove doors (or at least swing them fully forward, flat against the body) and fold the front windshield down. Tire noise on the highway can get to be a bit noticeable, however.
Otherwise, I always try to get a vehicle with a sunroof, as that gives you some extra camera positions to shoot into or out of, and the ability to light the talent down through it.

We built a tow device that left the car on the ground for a commercial shoot a couple of years ago. PM me and I'll put you in touch with the guy who did it. (He's my line producer and a sometime stock car racer.)
