  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone pick between the 2? Red and Film...

As for the arguement going on, Every picture does tell a story, some are just less clear.

This thread was meant to be provocative. I'm so tired of people getting caught up in pixel count and other ridiculous technology discussions when you should be out shooting more and discussing less. Anyone else feel that the spirit of film making is getting killed by the technical side? The Red is the most amazing camera on the market, PERIOD. So take your incredible tool out and shoot. If you would like to donate your Red to me id be more than happy to shoot every minute I have the cam. Until then I will continue happily shooting on whatever my budget will allow.

Thanks everyone who has participated in the thread and happy shooting.

Why would you ever really care if people get caught up in pixel count? The technical side of film making is very important to some of us on the site. In fact we come here to talk about it and share opinions. I think its unreal that some of the best come on this site and share all kinds of technical information for free. Its a huge part of what makes this site so great. Example: I am getting ready to purchase new glass. I can read for hours on this site about the technical advantages and disadvantages of almost anything that will go on the front of my camera. Along with that I can find tons of actual test done like, side by side comparison in all different seniors of shooting. Now why would I not want to read that technical info before I drop a shit ton of cash?
I understand the importance of story telling but the tech side of things are really important for us as well. What would REDUSER be with out tech talk?

I don't think you understand what im saying. I too come here for technical info. Its the fact that people choose to let the technical downfalls prevent them from shooting, that is the problem. All equipment has its technical downfalls. The information on the site is incredibly useful no doubt. The problem I have is when people don't take advantage of the tools they have, my whole point. I just want people to take what they have and do their best to capture great images. That is all.

OH!!!! I didn't understand and still kinda don't. Are there a bunch of people on this site not "taking advantage of the tools they have" and "choose to let the technical downfalls prevent them from shooting"? I never really noticed that.

You see its your tone that I have a problem with. Try and stop preaching to us with trickery. You should not have a problem with anyone on this site and try to only worry about yourself getting out there and shooting great images.

For someone who joined just over 2 months ago, you act like you have read every thread. I do not have a problem with a single person on the site, I don't know where you deduct that? I'm not the one with the negative tone, read your last post. You call it trickery, but it was meant to be taken with a grain of salt. This was not meant to trick anyone, although it came off that way. It was meant as an inspiration to get out and shoot with the tools you have and not let your gear get between you and your images. ( I have an HDV camera which I have never complained about. It is the best camera in my price range and I do what I can with it, regardless of its shortcomings.) I don't want to sit here and go back and forth with you this way. Call it trickery if you want, being provocative was the intention.

I haven't read every thread but have been on here a lot longer than 2 months. Done. No hard feelings.

This thread was dumb, i was seriously looking at those screenshots thinking how weird they looked.

like: "man if you mess with the contrast and noise/grain in these setups, none of them will look good"

if the point of this test was to prove that alot more goes into a frame than just pointing a certain camera in a direction and rolling, i think you failed. from the threads i have read on this board people here are pretty well versed in the history and process of cinematography. which of course has nothing to do with a camera... NOTHING.

however, the idea is sort of interesting, i find myself trying to convince cinematographer friends to watch certian "ugly" films because films go well beyond what they look like and some of my favorite cinematographers know/knew exactly how to best present a story without getting in the way with lights.

Nice images. They all look digital to me, but I thought the guy lighting the cigarette had a bit of the red look to it. Some may feel tricked but I like the intention of your thread.

Agreed. I have shot stuff on my $175 FLIP Mino and had people believing it was EX-3 or even HD-CAM.

Can't tell anything under a certain resolution and it's all about getting EVERY shot perfect, in which case you need the right tools.

Nothing to do with whether you can make a great movie on VHS, of course you can, not the point.

I thought it was a good exercise. Thank you.

Possibly for people who never shoot film, shoot outs are usually a joke it's pretty easy to see what is going on in difficult conditions.
