  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera proxies in FCPX

SInce FCPx cannot convert R3D files, you have to use RCX to create ProRes files. This is what Optimized media means. If you use RCX to create the ProRes files to 4:2:2 (or 4:4:4) then you do not need to use the Optimize option when importing. This Optimization is for when you ingest material that is not ProRes, like MTS or H264.

If you do go the 4:4:4 route, this can be very sluggish on your computer, so you can have FCPx create proxy media on ingest. They're pretty decent ProRes files perfect for editing. At any time you can turn off the proxy option to automatically see the highres 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 clips in the timeline. If you are not using 4:4:4 files your system may be fine with not creating Proxy files either.

Thanks Bob! How do I "turn off" the proxies?

Thank you very much!

ok, so now my question is, why does FCPX save all my render files to my boot drive, and can I render to a external drive if I want to?

I would check out some tutorials on YouTube, or get Ripple Training's guide to FCPX. It goes thru everything and you'll have a much better understanding of how media/project management works in the program.

Thank you, David :D The help is very appreciated!

Brandon,

This is a "possible workflow".

Everything depends on where/how you want to edit, color grade etc. I'll stick to an all RCX workflow.

1. render out PR 4444 of your selects from RCX to a 4K File. You can use RCX in out point to trim etc. REDCOLOR 2, REDLOG FILM
2. Import the media into FCP X and have FCP "create optimized media"
3. Set your sequence like this.

4. Edit with the preferences like this...

5. Then when you are finished your edit/ color correction, etc you simply relink to all of the highrez files by changing the preferences. It seems to easy to be true but it is.

6. Set your sequence setting to the size of the orginal 4K media. Then just render the final sequence.

Now you have a 4K Prores 4444 rendered and color corrected sequence of your final edit. From here you can create all of your other "media" for uploading or whatever.

If you don't want to Color correct in FCP X, no problem. Export and FCP X XML and it can be opened in DAVINCI RESOLVE. There it can be relinked to the PR 4444 media, graded, rendered and sent back to FCP X.

If you want to grade from the original r3d that is easy too.

Export the FCP XML, open in resolve, from resolve export an FCP 7 XML, open the FCP 7 XML in clipfinder and relinnk it to the r3d media. Now reopen the CLIPFINDer'ed FCP XML in Resolve and you can point it to all the R3D media, render in REsolve and send back to FCPX 7. (limited to 1920x1080 timeline).

It all works. I've tested and used them all.

David

David, thank you so much. And with pictures, no less. I'm sure many people will find this helpful, and am glad to see that you started a new thread to share more workflows.

Thanks,
