  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera or Film School?

Ethereal,
Your posts are WAY too long to read all the way through, so I apologize if this advice is useless to you, but I will throw it out there anyways. A lot of guys here are telling you to go to film school to expand your knowledge from just technical proficiency to a wider understanding of cinema. That's very true.

But I would encourage you to take your knowledge a step further and try and study something other than cinema as well. If you're going to make movies that matter, you need to bring some kind of insight or experience to the table. That's why I always recommend that film students also study some form of history, philosophy, psychology, anything that will give you greater insight into the human experience.

Hope that helps...

that's very true julio. Vittorio Storaro once said that cinema was "la decima musa", the tenth muse, because it lends itself from all the other nine muses. I actually arrived at my decision to pursue cinema after years of dabbling in/studying philosophy, history, mythopoeia, linguistics, metacognition, anthropology and the like. my main obsession has always been what makes storytelling tick, and why are stories so important to us. i have honestly come to believe that cinema is a distillation of the arts, that the advent of cinema was nigh inevitable, and it has yet to come to its peak as an art form. and i'm sure many people think the same.
