After upgrading to B17 yesterday, our RED no longer recognizes our Red Drive. It won't boot with the drive plugged in and plugging it in after boot makes the camera lock up. On the rare occasion that the cam does not hang, it never displays any information about the drive. The rear LCD reads "NO DIGMAG" and the monitor tells us there is no media present. Trying to run the format operation yields the "FAILED, this media is too slow" error, which is the same error the camera produces when no media is present.

The drive itself works on our Macs over Firewire. We have even formatted the drive on the Mac using the instructions in the Build 17 manual. This did not change the behavior of the camera.

Does anyone have any tips for getting the camera to recognize the RED Drive when it's being stubborn?

More info: the drive can use the CF cards no problem. We do not have a spare drive cable.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer some advice.

Have you reinstalled build 17 again since the troubles began?

Suffered exactly the same problem a week ago when shooting for a trailer in Brussels! Had installed Build 18. Thought it was because of this, so I went back to Release Build 17 v3.4.1. Worked out well on powering up, but failed to work the next morning. Both cable and drive worked well (gave it a check). Any help appreciated!

PS Positive side of it: got to know a Brussels reduser who borrowed me his CF cards (thanks Mathieu!). Now we are heading for a co-production - would never have met him without this issue :)

Going to follow up on my own issue here, which we resolved today.

We were able to mount the drive on the camera by rolling back to 16 then back up to 17. After that, we changed our resolution from 4K 2:1 to 2k 2:1 29.97 fps. The camera recognized the drive and we reformatted. After that, we could go back to our original resolution and re-reformat in the proper settings. Test shots look good and I learned a lot more about the camera while fixing this.

Always better to have a tech day in the office than on the set! Thanks to Sean for reaching out to us, which was greatly appreciated.

We've been getting 'media to slow' error when using CF cards!? This happens on all our cards. I need to pull the card out and then put it back in only then will the camera recognize the media.

The camera is build 17 3.4.1 and the cards are Red 8gb CFs the module was not upgraded yet though we are not using 16gb cards could that be the problem?

Hi guys,

my Red DIT Lee Niederkofler :ninja: managed to fix the issue with the non recognized drive. Here is his experience:

1 go to 2k 2:1
2 format the drive
3 set the resolution (4k, 3k, 2k), ratio (2:1, 16:9, HD), framerate etc. you want
4 re-format the drive
5 from now on do NOT change resolution (4k, 3k, 2k), ratio (2:1, 16:9, HD), framerate or any other parameter - and the cam will recognize the drive
6 if you need different settings and to switch between them, format different drives

Hope this works out for the others as well. Build 17.

Cheers, Fritz
