  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera Build 4.0.18 Available for Download

Single Spot or Center. I've tried continuous also.

Oddly, if I change the AF/M slider on the lens to M while in the Focus menu, the camera immediately switches off those options - so it's recognizing the lens.

Could the start button I'm pressing half-way be malfunctioning?

This is a very low mileage camera, so I'd be surprised it the button is having problems, but ... is there a way to test focus other than pressing 1/2 way - or test the button?

I've got a REDMOTE and the side handle, if they could be used.

BTW - a button on the REDMOTE to focus (as I'm often in another room monitoring thru HDMI) would be invaluable.

You can map any button (including one on the REDmote) to start auto-focus:

1. Goto: Settings->Setup->Keys
2. Goto the "Key Mapping" Tab
3. Press the key you want to map (say REDMOTE user A)
4. A list of events for that key will appear (for most keys this is just the press and release events)
5. Map the Press event to: "AF: Start"

Ahh - found that the half-press on the brain was disabled, and half press on the REDMOTE was already set to AF:START.

Odd, I never changed either key and it used to work on the brain.

Thanks!

Now if only there were a way to map a sequence of key presses on the REDMOTE (obviously expert mode) to format the SSD or zap the last take.

Interesting that the mapping was not there for the half-press on the side handle. Now that you've corrected it are things working correctly?

Hey Trent, sorry for derailing. Do you know if lcd touch flip fix will come soon/next?
Thanks

FYI it is possible to adjust focus using the scroll wheel on the redmote with a Canon lens. I cann't remember how, but do remember getting this to work a year ago. Although it didn't give infinite focus distance settings, it was a useful feature

It wasn't there for the brain half-press, I didn't look at the side handle's settings (but it was there in my previous build of a few versions back).

Yes, all is working ok now, and the sound synch issues I'd seen with hdmi also seem to have disappeared with this release, so it seems very solid.

BTW - any word on HDMI @ 23.976 instead of 24 hz?

And the ability to format the SSD from the REDMOTE and also kill the last take?

The Key Actions for that would be "Focus: Near" and "Focus: Far".

The brain's half-press does not default to Start Auto Focus (it may have in the past, I don't recall).

I'm not sure about the HDMI frequency question - I will have to get back to you on that.

There is currently no way to format the SSD from the REDMOTE (other than navigating through the menus on the camera).

There is currently no way to delete the last take.

Hey Trent, is it possible to have the playback buttons (i.e. Play, Pause, Next clip, Prev Clip, x1 speed, etc) display on the REDMote? I have used the REDMote recently to play back footage from my EPIC through an HDMI connection, but in order to successfully move through clips and hit play again, I have to be able to see my RED Touch 5.0. If this doesn't exist yet, I would love to see this in a future REDMote firmware update.

You can map various playback actions to buttons on the REDMOTE. That is, we have the following key actions:
Playback/Preview: Toggle
Playback: Cycle Speed
Playback: Next Clip
Playback: Play/Pause
Playback: Prev Clip
Playback: Set In Point
Playback: Set Out Point
Playback: Step Forward
Playback: Step Backward
Playback: Toggle Direction
Playback: Toggle Loop

I hope this answers your question. It wasn't clear to me if there is something else you need.

Trent, you answered it perfectly. I was originally asking if there was a GUI where I could "see" the playback controls on the REDMote, but now that I know that I can assign all these buttons to create a "playback page," that will do just fine.

Thanks for the quick response!

Unfortunately, you wouldn't really be creating a "playback" page on the REDMOTE. You would need to map the appropriate key actions to some of the physical buttons on the REDMOTE (and those would be constant across any of the pages you were on). One nice work-around would be assign the toggle playback/preview action to a key on the REDMOTE (say User A). Then use the Auto Presets page to assign a playback set of key mappings when you enter playback and a preview set of key mappings when you enter preview (exit playback). That way your REDMOTE keys would be redefined in playback.

I've seen people in the past assign the navigation keys on the REDMOTE (up/down/left/right/enter/wheel) to the playback actions - this could work for you as well.

The Key Actions for that would be "Focus: Near" and "Focus: Far".
And i suggest to map that to a wheel on the side-handle, the zoom-rocker or the 1 and 2 button on the SSD-module. The REDMOTE already has this mapped to the wheel, when you select focus.

Works nicely and can be helpful, smaller steps would be welcome and well, yeah, dedicated hardware. It's like a teaser for a REDMOTE Pro. Hehe. But it doesn't have to be that one, why not do the thumbwheel thing or maybe try out a slider on a handle or gamepad-like triggers (like the midas-mount, just the electronic way). Electronic focus-pulling shouldn't be bound to wheels. Ok, i should stop thinking out loud now. ;)

Hi Trent

Do you know why the power won't switch over to the battery in the handle when my main battery (AB) runs dead?

Is a fix on the way?

This should work (and has for a very long time). Please file a support ticket - there may be a problem with your side handle. Does it switch over if you pull the main power completely (instead of letting it run dead)?

Yes Trent, it does switch if I pull the battery completely but doesn't when the battery runs dead.

Also do you know how to fix the 1:1 pixel judder... when I switch to 1:1 to get focus and switch back to normal view I get a "judder" on the image and have to switch back and forth or restart the camera to get it to work correctly and remove the judder effect on the image.
