Calvin Klein " Downtown " by David Fincher shot on EPIC MONOCHROME

Great Job!

Hi Jarred, a question if I may - so was the Monochrome something that was requested by David Fincher to produce this film, so Red looked into it and decided to make the Epic Monochrome?

If so, that's pretty cool.

That is correct. Fincher came to me one day last fall and told me the concept of this piece.. said he wanted to shoot it monochrome and asked if there was any way for us to get better tonal range for shooting monochrome outside of just desaturation and post. After I had a quick chat about the options with our sensor engineers.. the monochrome program was born. ( the same day )

Ha rad, very cool. And everybody benefits.

I don't understand how a commercial to be delivered in barley hd on the Internet and tv can justify a whole new camera system, surely it must only be 1/8th (at best) the quality David and the makers saw in post and nothing that reflects the benefits that the camera has so how is it justified from reds standing?

p.s I love the commercial and the camera I'm just curious

When professionals make movies, they don't think about the end format or resolution of the delivery. They simply want the best. Besides Fincher commercials are great and will stand the test of time. I'm sure he wishes his earlier work was shot at 4K. A post convert will never look as good as a dedicated B+W camera. It make sense to offer variations on a core technology to different markets. If the Monochrome wasn't profitable it would have gone by now.
