Calling all Nikon 28-70mm AFS lens owners. Does your lens "shake" inside?

Hi all. . .

I just bought a Nikon 28-70mm Nikon f2.8D ED AF-S lens. I have the 17-35mm version already.

When the lens arrived, it looked pristine. . . exactly as described. But when you shake the lens, you feel and hear the glass (or something heavy) actually moving back and forth a little. My 17-35 is completely tight.

Do I have a problem? Or is it typical of the 28-70mm lens? Since I just got it, I want to be able to return it quickly if there is an issue.

Thanks much.

Stephen

Stephen, I owned a 28-70 for a little bit and it never did anything like you describe here. But, then again, I didn't use it much. And I definitely never shook it!

But that doesn't sound quite right to me.

Well, I didn't shake it either, really. It is just that you can definitely feel things moving around in there. Felt it the second I pulled out of the case.

Anyone actually have one of these pups now who can help me?

Stephen

Stephen,

I own both of these lenses and did a shake test. I was able to get both of them to rattle a bit. It seems the 28-70 has more play built into it, maybe for the internal motor's needs, my guess. Never had an issue with any of the zooms in the years of using them however. All great lenses.

Great. . . this is exactly what I'm looking for. Having never had an AF lens before, I was just a bit disconcerted by feeling what seemed to me to be "loose parts" inside. I'll put it on and see how it looks.

Thanks again.

Stephen

I'll test mine when I get home.

Does yours have a "rough" spot in the zoom at about 50-65mm? It's where the lens front element reverses direction.

Hi there, Mike. . . as a matter of fact, it does have that rough spot. I found I could cleanly (with great focus) zoom between, say, 60mm and 70mm, but anything past that and the focus just dies. Please do give yours the shake test and tell me if you can feel/hear goodies moving inside.

It seems to work just fine, although, let me tell you, I'm really feeling this loss of light from 1.4 to 2.8. Geez. I had no idea how good I had it with all my fast primes. I'm definitely keeping my 50mm f1.4 and my 85mm 1.4 (and maybe even my 135mm f2), 'cause I can't believe how much light I lose with those two stops. I had always used fast primes before, but went to the zooms just to get more focal length options. I miss my light. And I HATE noise!

I just tested mine, and it shakes a little bit, but it seems it is the focus ring moving a little. However, we've had that lens for almost three years and use it ALL the time, so it may have developed a little play. A great lens though.
