  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Call for delivery...

It's strange that there are people still hesitating.

There is no reason for any hesitation at this point.
The only question is:
Do you want a 35mm PL mount camera or not ?
If you do, you have no choice other than RED in the market now.

1/2" 1080p SONY EX1 and 720p 2/3" Panasonic HVX500 are the only ones near $17K. Who wants those?

Both are nice cameras – but for very different fields of work…

Regards,

Uli

We will be sending out an email to customers #1-500 shortly.

Basically, it says that if you are a reservation holder in this serial number range, you have until August 1st (this year) to make the decision whether to pay the balance and take delivery or get your deposit refunded and lose your position in line.

We feel very strongly that we have listened to the community and have been very fair about this. The RED ONE, with Build 16, now exceeds almost every expectation and is suitable to be called a "production camera". By August 1st, the SDK will have been released to the community and REDCINE and RED Alert! will be "Release Versions".

We need to know who is in and who is out so we can better plan our production schedule.

After we have finished with #1-500, we will then look to #501-1000... and so on.

We appreciate everyone's patience and continue to look forward to delivering "surprise capbilities" for the RED ONE going forward.

Jim
But hold on, according to your Avatar thingie you're RED #1.
What are you going to do, pay the balance, or ask for a refund?
That's the real test.

But have you been holding out on us?
According to this article, you've shipped over 5,000 cameras so far.

Thanks for posting the article, with all due respect:

I very much doubt that Jim is holding out on anyone...He is a guy that plays by the rules and I think his employees will verify that. The author probably misunderstood or intended to say over 5,000.00 ordered.

was 'WANTED' movie entirely shot on red or just parts of it? like vfx shots, slowmo or such?

FYI, Delivery of this email is complete. If you've got Serial #1 - #500 and you haven't taken delivery yet, this note should be in your Inbox.

Not exactly- there's the SI2K, the Viper, etc. RED is great but it's uniqueness is in resolution and price point- not the camera mount.

I believe vfx shots where done with red and film (in tandem). Once edited however, the red shots were not included in the final print.

correct me if I'm wrong (as if I have to ask;)

RED was on the "Wanted" set last summer to "see how it would do". The RED ONE prototype (several months before our 1st shipment) was shot sparingly but in several different setups. Everyone seemed very happy with the footage. In fact, Timur bought a RED camera (and paid for it and took delivery when his number came up). So did Jon Farhat (VFX supervisor). At that time the workflow was not smooth with their Avid system and I suspect that integrating some token RED footage would have been a courtesy they did not have time for. This is entirely speculation on my part. Maybe they couldn't find an appropriate "add film grain" filter? :-)

I am anxious to see the movie. It looked like it would be very interesting. They had a great DP (Mitch Amundsen), great talent and Timur has a very unusual vision that I think will translate wonderfully to the final cut. We had a terrific time learning on this set and the 1st AC (Todd Schlopy) gave us tremendous guidance on setting our camera up and features we needed to add.

We looked at this movie as an opportunity to learn and prove that the footage could stand up next to film. I think everyone on the set will agree we succeeded. Several members of the "Wanted" crew, in addition to Timur and Farhat, ordered cameras.

Jim

I think "Wanted" is old news, really. Look at the new res! (Days old? :>))We're looking at tomorrow, which ain't really far away. But of course, RED's got to show what's been done with it, which surprisingly should be more at this point. But not really. Big tickets are so annoying! Just ask David! (Goliath....)

I absolutely don't want to be on the "hold on a bit until I find my dough" list, but if I do have to postpone my delivery, at #3327, are you looking at lesser leeways? I'm having an affair with this camera and site for sure, and my previous posts, one on top of the other, are hopefully less rediculous than the last, and I thank everyone for their silence, but I wouldn't mind some fixed date like, well, you've got six months, bro, and then you're bumped. DECIDE!

I can live with that. Look what's happened in the last two months with this product!

First, sensors went wacky. Then pyramids were built by CaliAliens, and everything fell into place. Congrats on all your pros, RED TEAM, but if I hit a con, how long do I get to make it right? I do so much want to partake, my friends.... ...I'll keep a positive attitude, but all else is subject to change....

Hey lighten up Arethra! I'm only being a smartass, respect was neither expected nor considered desirable:biggrin:

While we're at it (sorry for the offtopic question) - will there be a way to plug into the SDK in the .NET framework, Deanan?

I would assume there will be libraries that can be linked to from any language that can support C++ style calling / linking conventions. I see no reason why it couldn't be integrated with .NET... If you really feel the need to do so.

SI2K and Viper etc are still prototypes. They do not have the funding or organizational skill or business savvy of Jim. So, they will be short blimps in the evolution of Digital cameras. RED has taken off and for all practical purposes killed off all the competition in the filed of 35 mm PL mount camera. Panasonic executive told me that HVX500 are not selling. Sony had trouble selling EX1 ; so they brought out EX3. Ex3 is not selling well either.
The answer to all this is RED at $17K.

Sony and Panasonic will continue to make consumer cameras. But, their movie camera business is practically folded.
By 2010, all Hollywood movies will be made on RED. That is MHO.

.....
all movies is too optimistic...
i guess a lot of the 1 mil. to 20 mil. features will be shot digitally.
and i think it will be epic rather then red in 2010.
but could be totally different, because 2 years in the world are around 6 red years...:)

sony ex1 was sold out in germany.
i think it´s a bestseller indeed.

and an awesome camera (in this prize range)

but however, i want finally my red ... please let june end ...
