  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'd like to get some feedback on this. Currently I'm shooting some slomo stuff for stock, things falling against a black background. Filming at 2K, 240fps, around 1/384th sec shutter. The black is really noisy, a constant moving noise that's very obvious to the eye.

I'm running v2.0.8 and can calibrate successfully at 24fps 1/48th sec shutter. But when I try to calibrate at 1/384th sec, calibration fails every time. Is this meaningful?

Hi Paul. I don't have my Epic yet so I don't have any specific experience with that issue but if the forum doesn't yield any answers - you might want to try submitting a tech support ticket with RED or dropping an e-mail to your Bomb Squad rep...

I'll definitely test this out as soon as I get my Epic...

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe set shutter speed to one of the presets near 1/384, like 1/400. No basis for this other than I would try it out of desperation. Good luck.

I had the same problem once with the EPIC, I re-flashed the firmware and all went smooth.

Have you set it to you FPS ISO and kept just the body cap on before running the calibration set to user preference?

yes, I followed the manual procedure.

it seems to be happening at any of the higher shutter speeds. It's a weird issue, and it seems to be causing flickering chroma noise in the shadows which is not very nice. I'm having to run the files through Virtual Dub with the msu-deflicker to get rid of it. As my light sources are a mixture of tungsten and daylight I don't think it's lighting.

good idea, Panos. I'll give it a go.

Any news with this? I just got my Epic and test this issue since I remember reading about the issue. When I did that, the calibration failed (300fps, 2K WS, 800 iso, 1/384)

One thing I'm trying at the moment is doing the same test but with a slightly lower frame rate (240 fps). I'm interested to see if that one will calibrate black shading properly...

My Scarlet is back at Red now for evaluation. It has a vertical line ( weak sensor column ) at high ISO and short shutter speeds ( 1/200 or so ) .
It would also fail calibration for these settings. I attempted to calibrate to see if the line would go away. My other camera seems like it has a good sensor, so I just want my other one to match quality.
I don't want my film to have what looks like a scratch in it !

2K is a bit noisier than than 5K/4K and blacks particularly low exposures, (as opposed to over exposed blacks/shadows that are then crushed in post) are often noisy. Underexposed 2K may be creating the perfect storm noise. Just a theory.

I don't think anyone is questioning the noise of 2k vs 4k/5k... It's more of an issue that black shading is failing at various frame rates and therefore unable to perform the proper blackshading for those settings.

I'm continuing my testing right now running various frame rates at 2K WS and so far they've all failed. I'll post a list after I've run down the full standard rates I shoot.

Tonight's collective tests:

Failed calibration at 2K WS, 300fps, 1000 iso, 1/384

Failed calibration at 2K WS, 240fps, 800 iso, 1/384

Failed calibration at 2K WS, 200fps, 800 iso, 1/400

rebooted the camera

Failed calibration again at 2K WS, 200fps, 800 iso, 1/400

Rebooted again

Failed calibration at 2K WS, 150fps, 800 iso, 1/284

Failed calibration at 2K WS, 120 fps, 800 iso, 1/240
