  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Calibration Card request

In the Beta you can store up to 4 Black Shade Calibration Presets. Each preset allows for an operation range within the calibration spec.

A curious question for me is how many are you looking to store?

The only reason I have thought of having more than 4 is allowing for an additional 4 that would be for Black Shades to use exclusively with the Motion Mount. That's just me though.

Do we know when the build is coming out of beta? I'm not so keen on having a beta build on my camera so I rather go for the stable real releases.

I think since the day I have received my Dragon (late 2013) I have only been using the beta builds on productions. Not saying this is always the answer, but mostly saying it's not something to be real scared of.

What build are you running right now Phil?

Beta 5.2.21

I always use the latest beta build. That said I always test it out thoroughly first before a gig, meaning I don't just install the morning of and jump into shooting. So far no real concerns and works fine. Did the same when I had my Scarlet MX, did the same when I had my Epic MX. Same today with Dragon.

I would love it if RED could put a small amount of memory into the DSMC Adaptor Module and +1 Module just for this purpose.

It would be awesome because you could always store / select your black shades without having to swap memory cards to do so.

Yes, but again, since it's a calibration range I'm curious to see how many people would desire? Currently it's 4 user presets, potentially I can see room for as many as 8 presets (and I'd like the ability to name them!). There's a chance that this "cap" on presets could be raised to allow for 5, 6, 7, or even 8 on the camera without the use of a extra memory on a specific module.

On that front, if it goes that way and is module specific I would prefer to have the ability to store Looks, Black Shades, Presets, and maybe even other "future minded" things on an SD card that can simply be popped into a slot.

Me too. I've just been running the betas exclusively.

@phil

you can name the calibrations at the folder level on your computer. Previously you could name them on export but that has changed on dragon.

Thanks Phil, good to know about the beta storing 4. That's a little more usable range. I'll update soon.

Curious, and I'm sure it's documented somewhere but what is the calibration range? Is it an fps range within each cal?

This is only in Dragon, right? Only one on the MX cameras.

Correct. Dragon only as I think Red tossed some more memory inside it's brain to allow for this.

The Black Shading Calibration is tied into your shutter speed. I shoot mostly at 24fps at 1/48 or 1/60. I think when I Black Shaded at that it gives me a "green" temp light from 1/24th up until 1/144th or so. Can't remember off the top of my noggin. I'm more or less sort of just picky about the whole thing and right now my calibrations are:

-1/48
-1/120th
-1/24th
-1/240th

I personally don't shoot many other shutter speeds for motion picture use. The key for me here is I do need to create 4 new presets when using the Motion Mount, but it doesn't take much time to fire off a Black Shade these days. So it's more or less not a huge deal. Heh, but I'd like 8 slots one day :)

Me three! only betas for all productions. always have the latest release and beta on a thumb drive junt in case, but never had to go back to a release for any reason.

+1 this would be great. Easier management of key maps more BS calibration settings please. Automatic BS setting loading based on frame rate & closest operating temp would be a blessing too...

Thank you,

Thank you,

Most often run betas, but have a tendency to "stick" to builds that "just work".

If people ask, I do recomend "release" builds, for insurance/liability reasons.
(and there have been a few funky betas. Long ago now, though)

That would be awesome :)

Have you downloaded the red dsmc toolkit from red.com?
There is a preset and keyframe making app.

Like phil stated. If you do you BS calibrations at 1, 90, 180, 360 degrees you pretty much cover all the usable ranges.

If you are Black Shaded at 180 degrees, you can move down toward 90 or up toward 270 without getting warnings. So four blackshadings on board are quite handy.

Maybe in a future build they could find a way to do this.

1. Have a script that runs which would match a BS with a selected shutter speed (now it's manual)
2. Use redlink to load BS calibrations from your phone or iPod touch on an Adblock network. (Would be better than an extra SSD) a little extension to the red tools app that could save these files to and from the camera.

Ahem! Redlink developers, are you listening? :)
