  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Calibration (Blackshading) Failure

I've had no problems with black shading, and shaded the camera factory setting 24p at 48fps and on user setting 25p at 50fps and found no problem on other settings just with this black shading.
I black shade about every week and this works fine.

The only problem l have had was the screen lock, locked. Red advised to reapply firmware and that sorted everything out. I'm running 2.0.8 Beta and had no problems as yet.

Sent in my Scarlet under RMA, received it back today. Still Failed to Calibrate at 24fps 1/60. Upgraded firmware to 3.0.0, and achieved the same result. Very disappointed that RED techs would return a unit with the same problem persisting.

Once again, I can get a Successful Calibration at 1/48, but at no other setting.

Having same issues as most of you..

Black shades only at 4k 24fps and 1/48 second. Help!

We're looking into this issue.

Some guidelines:
The black shading (default) feature is for shutter speeds 1/48 and faster.
The black shading (Current FPS/Exposure) is only intended for longer shutter speeds.
The format you are in when you run black shading has no effect on the process.

Copy that. Thanks for the info!

I ran into an issue when trying to black shade wit HDR turned on. I did not realize it was on and could not figure out why it was failing. Discovered HDR was on, turned it off, and then it worked perfect.

Yes, we are going to update the wording on a few of the dialog's to make that a little more clear. You do need to take the camera out of HDRx mode before calibrating.

FWIW - just did my first "standard" black shading in a dim room with the body cap on and a cloth draped over the mount/cap. No problems.

BTW - this was right after a successful firmware upgrade.

I've confirmed that this is a firmware bug. We'll be pushing a fix for it in our next release.

So does being able to Calibrate only at 1/24 and 1/48 (while Failing at all other shutter speeds) indicate a non-faulty Brain at this point? TERRY, what settings did you successfully Calibrate with?

Does RED indicate re-Calibration when changing shutter speed is unnecessary? Would this be the case for changing ISO, resolution, or frame rates as well, so long as the shutter is above 1/48?

If you can calibrate using black shading (default) it indicates the brain is not faulty.

black shading (default) uses a 1/48 exposure time (also what RED One and RED One MX use). This will give you good results for 1/48 and faster.

For longer exposures ~1/4 and up you may want to consider using the at current FPS and exposure option.

Temperature is your other consideration.

ISO and resolution have no effect on the black shade process.

Frame rate is only listed since you need to limit your frame-rate to achieve longer shutter times.
