We are seriously considering a purchase of the Caldigit 6 client Supershare System for shared edit storage.

I know this is fairly new, but was hoping that someone has used this and could provide some feedback.

Does it work as advertised? What is the quality of the service and support?

Thanks.

I have heard of many good cases of Caldigit really coming through for people support wise. I think Jarred just dealt with them and their simpler AV drives. Supershare looks like a great setup. Very interested if anyone has experience with them either. From what I have heard Caldigit seems to back what they advertise.

CalDigit support is great.

Their products are usually pretty good. Some of their lower-end RAID solutions like the HDelement and HD-One are not as robust as the HDPro line, SuperShare, etc.. I personally haven't worked with a SuperShare, so can't comment. But it looks like a nice solution. The only catch I see is that it's their own proprietary PCIe-based interconnect rather than a more industry-standard fiber channel or Infiniband solution. However, it's nice and fast and can run over optical cables up to 100meters. It looks very capable to me.

The cables are pricey-- several hundred for 50M cable and they come pre-terminated which could be tricky to pull.

Supershare seems to be in its own class for price/performance, especially compared with XSAN.

Editshare and Unity seem like they are in a new price/performance class. Promise looks good but 1/3 more expensive.

I haven't used the Supershare but I do have a Caldigit HDPro - and I'm very satisfied with the company as a whole. I purchased rack mount wings for the HDPro and they not only expedited the shipment but it didn't cost me a penny. Only complaint is that the design of said mount causes a forced 1RU space above and below your RAID. As my carts are fully mobile, this sucks. I solved it with an acetylene torch ;)

BTW - I called up asking if they supported Ubuntu Linux the other day and they took down my version and said they'll have R&D put together a driver just because a customer asked. Very cool policy.

The one caveat is the price, not cheap but you get what you pay for.

I came across this forum trying to find anyone who could have had probs with a SuperShare, so I figured might as well give a snapshot on our experience so far.. will also update if our situation changes..

Our SuperShare arrived just before xmas, and Caldigit's engineers are still trying to get all of our machines working on it. Great support, but still to get a solution on our particular issue (our problem could be rare/1 in a million, but I guess still worth mentioning).

The SuperShare works fantastic on one of our computers (as advertised), but we just can't get the other ones to fire up when connected to HDPros via the SuperShare (driver issues, etc..)

We've used HDPros for the last couple of years and they are awesome -fast and very reliable. Still to make up our mind up on the move to SuperShare though - it's definitely been a test of Caldigit's support!

When we get ours up and running (yes, still hopeful), happy to answer any Qs on performance, etc..

- Noel - Re. ExaSan http://exasan.accusys.com.tw/exasan_1.html , just as a random factoid, I have a hunch that the Caldigit SuperShare and ExaSan Switch are exactly the same hardware, just with different faces - a couple of reasons being that the switch, PCI-e card and even the online interface for managing both are exactly the same (exc. colour scheme :smile5:) + if I let my machine automatically download the driver it installs an accusys one!

Uggg....

We purchased and paid for a super share December 7. Told a 3 week lead for delivery.

It's been 14 weeks.

Delay after delay. Getting really old. If we'd known, we would have gone with a different solution.

The project we needed it for is over.

demand your money your back, they havent kept up their side of the deal....

such a shame, caldigit is a very good company too with usually stellar reviews. I'm sure components backlogged with Japan and everything won't help speed anything up either. Def, get your money back, and maybe consider building a custom san instead.

Any updates for this?

Unfortunately, communication was very poor, and the ship date slipped again and again.

The really sad part is that the whole point of us buying the system was negated. We finished the project before it arrived.
We've also had strange mounting issues with the drives.

Another negative, is that the storage can't be aggregated into a single large volume. That just makes management a big hassle. That wasn't clear going in.

So the sad part is that it's been kind of sitting there like a brick. We've got something coming up soon, so we'll probably try to get the kinks worked out before then.

hi Zach,

We just installed a supershare with 4 machines on SAN/ and 5 with metaLan- working well so far. it's wicked fast ( 700 mb/s to any of the fiber attached systems and 100/mb/sec over enet-cat 6) If you need a reference, we have a great team that did the setup/install- maybe they can help you?
