  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dear Red Users:
I have a friend who was on a hunting trip in North East Canada a few weeks ago. He is a cinema guy with lots of cold weather experience. They ran across two amateur astronomers who had been doing time lapse photography all night. The low temperatures had been 38 below and he noticed that the cables were completely pliable and had not suffered from the frigid weather. The short cable was about 18", the longest about 10'.

He managed to get the source from these men which I followed up on. This fellow is an amateur astronomer and a retired EE. He has developed a unique shielding for the cables and has used this technology for about 9 years. He can make any type of cable and has an interest in cinema. Currently he is making about 20-25 cables per month, mostly for friends.

My question is; Do any of you think there is a market for this? If so, what two cables would you choose to prototype?

Any comments are more than welcome.

Happy Holidays;
John

John .. I have shot with my camera in those conditions a few times and will mention my Scarlet and now my Epic worked flawlessly. If I were to prototype a cable it would probably be the EVF/ Monitor cable. Even better if they ended up a little cheaper then the "Red" ones.

Thanx for the reply. The fabricator was amazed at the costs. Cheaper is the goal

He's going to have a tough time getting costs down on these RED cables due to the LEMO connectors. Then there's the time involved in assembling them PROPERLY. And I wouldn't buy an off-brand connector as there have been too many bad personal experiences and horror stories out there in regards to knock-off LEMO connectors.

I agree with Jeff. The knock-off Chinese Lemo connectors (which are widely available on eBay) are not as durable as the legit Swiss-made original connector.
