I just read a report that Dalsa is discontinuing its digital-cinema division. Makes sense, but it's also too bad, as they had some good technology. How could they make a business case for continuing when Red has changed everything?

Of course they have other business units that compete well in their respective areas, so Dalsa isn't going away, but they've decided that discretion is the better part of valor and have left this battleground to Red and others. Apparently they are licensing their technology to Arri and will develop future sensor chips for Arri as well.

I have to give kudos to them for opening up the 4K market. Best wishes, Dalsa.

I admit, Dalsa had a good product, and they had an excellent sensor program. The sensors they supply to high end DSLR camera makers like Hasselblad are top notch. The achilles heal of the Dalsa program was twofold: A rental only business model based out of one location, and the limited choices of data acquisition ie: the need to be tethered to a bulky expensive data array. Along comes RED, and eliminates all that nonsense - now you've got freedom to move around without having to lug around and be tethered to all that bulky gear - and it already shows with at least 5 studio features using RED, plus all those that have not been disclosed yet.

Dalsa has some very interesting looking lenses listed on their website... I wonder if Arri will get those designs and release them? I'm particularly talking about the 180mm, 200mm, and 300mm T1.4 and the 18-75mm and 75-150mm T2.0 lenses.
