Hello Guys,

we discovered that when we atttach BWF Wave files to R3Ds and render them out as avid mxf in redcine - x that the Audio metadata like track names and comments the sound guy inputs at his recorder will not arrive in Avid!!

Direct import of the same files in Avid will get all Metadata in.

Since this Metadata not being there will give a big headache and addtitional time needen in final sound mixing it would be very important if the metadata could get handed through to avid from redcine.

we could of course import in avid, but there seem not to be realy good ways to slip the sound a couple of frames directly inside the source clip like you can do in advance in Redcine-X.

Any Comments or Help or RCX / RCX.PRO Roadmap for integration would be great!

thanks a lot !

I always recommend syncing in Media Composer to get all the metadata. And something I do is make the project a 35mm 4 perf project anyway. Once clips are synced via AutoSync, you can load each one that needs to be synced even tighter by switching the timeline view to source and using the 1/4 frame resync buttons found in the trim tab of the command pallet.

Thanks a lot Michael for that Tip!

But sometimes the handoff of the Material from DIT to Editing is only MXFs and AAF and the DIT does not get the chance to get into the Editors Avid Project or it is impractical to shuffle around bins.

So just out of curiosity, will there be a future implementation of rcx's mxf rendering where bwf metadata is going through?

I always thought that the assistant editors should get the MXF and AAFs out of REDCINE and the BWF files from the sound person and sync themselves... But more and more the cutting room wants it all done beforehand. As far as full BWF metadata through REDCINE, only RED folks can answer that one.

Hi Alex,

Can you send an email to redcinex at red dot com and include the specifics of exactly what you are looking for?

Thanks,
David

David - if you import the BWF into Media Composer, you will see all the metadata that is within the BWF chunk. If you want to one-up Media Composer, you would also include the iXML metadata as part of the MXF or ALE to be merged. But BWF filename, timecode, track comments, scene, take, etc. are all in the BWF file. You can also see this metadata in the free software WaveAgent from Sound Devices. I can send you the metadata column mapping.

David - BWF metadata mapping doc was just sent (9/28/11) to your @red.com email address.

Guys,

this is so awesome to see this Feature getting Rolling :) Live RED Avid Magic in the Making :)

This will save tons of time and money in audio postproduction :)

Willing to beta test this!

Hi all,

Sorry to hijack this thread .. But it's kind of relevant. I'm a location sound recordist but I also do the odd sound post job. I've just finished a short film that was shot on the red. We used a lockit box on the red which was jam synced from my 744t.

My question is.. How do you use the autosync feature in avid to read the TC from the WAV file and from the red files and sync them. I've used this work flow countless times with FCP with no problems. The editor doesn't seem to know how to do this and is trying to get out of doing it by telling the prod company thats its a very long process and that it will cost a lot to do it. I'm doing the sound post and am trying to fix this problem now.. Before it's a bigger problem later.

I realize those is an media composer question but I couldn't find this info anywhere on the avid site.

Thanks in advance

FYI f.. Shot on red 4k , ambient lockit was jam synced from 744t and attahced to red in TOD mode. Edit suite is media composer 6

What are you trying to read? BWF carries the timecode as part of the BEXT chunk metadata. Are you saying you redundantly recorded LTC to one of the audio tracks as well? Is this a playback timecode for a musical type show (like Glee)? Just importing the BWF files will get you the jam synced timecode. If the camera and the 744T were jam synced, the LTC record on an audio track is redundant... But if you want to decode the LTC - highlight all the clips that have LTC, go to the special menu and select "read audio timecode". You will be presented with dialog requesting which track this was recoded onto, and which AuxTC column the decoded timecode should reside.

Also, there is an Avid section in the workflow section for Avid specific questions related to RED.

@Michael: thank you for all you contribute here on REDuser!

@David: that type of BWF Metadata implementaion would be AMAZING! Thank you for looking into it!

All the best,

Hi David,

Awesome! Time for a test drive... :driving: Thank you :)

Quick cheeky request: would it be possible for the display on the Tangent Wave in REDcine-X Pro to display the function of a button when I re-assign it? For example, I like to assign the down function on the top knobs (rotary encoders?) as the reset - turn knob to adjust FLUT and press knob to reset FLUT - which then frees up the 9 lower buttons for other functions - but when I do as such it still displays Reset to Default (or something like that). Otherwise loving REDcine-X Pro and the Wave combo. Keep up the great work Team RED

More customizable Wave support is on the todo list.
