  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

But This New MacPro is soo slow...?

I think is already a famous problem the 4 decode that not use the all cores...

But now that i got the 2x2.23 Ghz Nahalem , i can say that almost everything seems the same...(compared to my mac pro 4 cores 2 years hold...)
I might be very wrong But :

-Playing QT Proxies in QT it use like 20% CPU and it won't even play the 1K (with the high quality setting)

-In FCP it won't even play the 1K proxie (classi system message that say "is too much..)

-In Redrushes only the 2K decode seems to use the full power and is giving me 10 fps....

-In compressor the DVD preset encode( HD Prores as source) at 2:1 like my macPro 4 cores...

Am i missing something?

I never used FCP and the Proxies but honestly i thought that with this machine was possible play the 2K proxie ...

Does anyone have more success with this 3 apps?

or are the applications itself that are not designed for this power?

Thanks

G

Nehalem

Nehalem

Hi,
I just got my 2.26 8-Core 16GB Nehalem a week ago.
i do not have any of your FCP/QT issues.
Proxies play well. FCP timeline plays 2K native QT well [25 fps] in medium quality/full frame rate RT.
I did not run any benchmarks [got no time].
But, i did notice a vast speed boost, as mentioned all over the place, in all transcoding from my former 2.6 Xeon 8-Core.
When i tap into compressor's 16-Core multi thread power, my mac gently & quietly hovers in it's place, just a few cm above the floor...
Example - compressor rendered [no frame controls] a 1:30 min. 320x180 16:9 h.264 from a 2k 2:1 file in a few seconds....

What do you mean by proxies play well? Which size? I have the same system (just with 8GB) and only the P proxies play well, using only 11% CPU.

It might be that you have "play high quality when available" turned on in quicktime.

I have a different problem with MAC !!!
Today UPS should have deliverd my New Nehalem !!!
Stupid UPS will do it on monday !!!

Well i might have something wrong in the system ,

but off course when i say issue in quicktime i mean with the high quality setting ... without that setting there is no reason to playback the 2K...

In fcp as i said i can't even playback the 1K ..it stop..any idea for that?

About compressor : maybe 320x180 h264 is different...please try mpeg2 (90 minute in one disc quality) from 2K or HD prores file...in mine is like 2:1 and the cpu it stay like at 30%...

i am guessing if the single processor go faster...maybe is the 16 core thing that is messing up the application...

Have you checked to see if the system is up to date? Might be a new system, but if your FCP isn't up to date, or your quicktime isnt...then there may be the issue...

not apple's fault on shipping...

i have the standard graphic card that comes with 2x2.23 , the nvidia 120 GT (512 MB),

but i think is not so relevant ...

Nehalem is a good cpu, but in reality it's just about 20-25% faster then the old quads. (..and about 40-60% more expensive :)
In jobs with allot of data movement, it can even be slower if you have the virtual cores on. i7 are good but a bit to expensive at the moment for me.

Hi Gabriele,

1. Have you changed the RT settings in your timeline?
Use medium quality and full frame rate - plays 2K native files with no problem.
2. Have you tried different R3Ds? [just to make sure the footage is ok].
3. Try wrapping some R3D files in QT with the Native setting in L&T. Just for a test - see if they play better than the proxies.

If the issue persists, and it's a new system anyway, i would try to reinstall all of it, since it is clear that something might have happened to your system software, who knows? if troubleshooting is taking too long, and we here do not have any good suggestions for ya, although a drag, it could be actually faster than finding the problem, if possible at all...
Make disk images out of your FCS DVDs, it will all install in 20 min.

Hi Snow,

Thank a lot,

actually i did changed the timeline settings ...
and the Prores 2K clip play super fine...

i'll try difefrent R3D and i'll try to reinstall...

But is good to know that in your system the 2K proxie play fine at medium quality...

PS:What macPro you Have?

PSS:what about Play the proxie in QT with the high quality settings?I mean what resolution should play Fine?

PSSS:There is any indication about the Red Codec installation ?I mean , should i install first the QT codec , than RedAler etc...And teh Latest QT have any problem?

Thanks a lot
