I'm changing my tune... everyone will be wickedly disappointed in the Scarlet announcement. Go to the Canon event. That is where the action is...

Jim

Hee hee hee...

Besides, the name Canon doesn't sound as cool as RED.

Canon = evil Empire
RED = the Rebellion

Choose your sides...

We'll drink their beer, wreck their house, romance their women . . . then come party with RED guys

Don't feel attacked, Jim, I'm sure everyone here will be in heaven. Even if there are, here and there, too wild expectations, the dream camera for the indy filmmaker is something Red could achieve - but I'm not inside your head ;-)

By discussing with filmmakers around me, here are the few specs they would like to get from a camera : S35 sensor, raw, 4k, different mounts, no need for high frame rates, for less than $6000. A kind of GH2 with 4k and raw. But it's maybe already too wild ;-)

So you want a RED ONE in a small package for (cough) less than $6K? Good luck with that.

I'm in for that deal as long as it comes with a Pink Unicorn

Dear Doctor Jim(Doctor of camera philosophy), I am 1000% sure that you will release a camera (brain only) for around $15000 which will satisfy all the real genuine people looking for a affordable professional cinema camera.

An off the shelf $600 camera now has better RAW resolution and IQ than the original 4K Red one...

the 1 fps is the sticking point however...

;-)

I'm not going to spill the beans... but I can say that some of you have over-shot the mark. Think beating the competition severely... but not impossible.

Jim

Please forgive the silly guesswork. I'm getting caught up in all of the excitement here. :-) I'm sure whatever is announced will be incredible.

It depends on the production numbers, no ? How many Red Ones are in the field ? 10,000 ? What if you were selling far more, for less money ?

The price I gave you is an estimate based on field use : if there is only a $20k camera for 4K, and $45k for 5K, most of the filmmakers will rent instead of owning, as they're doing a movie every 2-3 years. It's cheaper for them, and they will have a camera up-to-date every time. The difficulty is for the owners : they have to rent rent rent their camera within a 1-2 year period (before the next camera or upgrade comes) to get their money back. And, by discussing with a lot of camera owners, it's a tough task. Sure, some succeed.

If the camera price was lower, more people would own instead of renting, and/or would resale. It would keep the market more dynamic. Here in Europe, the second-hand market is very important in the cinema business.

A GH2 sells for $800, it does 1080p H264, no raw, with an almost S35 sensor. So adding $5200 for 4k, raw isn't too wild, is it ?

If everyone just expects what was already announced, 3K, 2/3 sensor etc, but with the fact that you can order from Nov 3rd, then I guess you won't be disappointed.

:-)

Yeah. That makes sense. I'm interested in a camera that functions as a quality "A" camera on our company's smaller projects, possibly with a Canon 5D picking up the slack when it comes to shots that require shallower depth of field on a wide angle lens. A camera more along the lines of what has been discussed 2/3" sensor, 3k, high frame rates, etc. would fill that particular niche extremely well.

When you start selling us my fav Red wine La Tâche for $60 - we'll sell France a 4K RED for $6K

Yes. Big leap. Maybe Panasonic or Olympus has the solution coming that you are looking for...

Jim, no, unfortunately... But who knows, everything changes in life ;-)

Josh, are you working for Red, when you say "we" ? It's funny to see how fanboism takes you ;-)

There is a difference with French wine though : your bottle, if it's a good wine, will sell for more 10 years later, which isn't the case of electronic equipment, which is what it is, just a tool ;-)

Not an employee and . . . the Scarlet has been aging for at least 3 years and should be served at 17C/63F with a fine meal on the evening of Nov 3rd. And, how dare you call a RED "just a tool"!!! A Vise-Grip is a tool - a RED is an extension of my soul.

Whatever Scarlet turns out to be... there will be nothing close to the price/performance.

Jim
