  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bummed about no Nikon Mount and price Increase

You're probably right, Martin. Perhaps Nikon wants to keep the 'window' open for future development of their own systems and are not sharing, or making life difficult for Red. Very logical possibility.

I don't think either Nikon or Canon give out information on their lens control protocols - AFAIK you have to reverse engineer all of it.

Again, the reason Canon is more attractive is because it is all electronic with electronic control of iris and focus on EVERY EF lens. The difficulty with Nikon is that you need both electronic AND mechanical working in concert - a much tougher deal.

The reason is that Canon abandoned their older FD mount when they moved to autofocus and went all electronic with the EF mount in the late 80s which is totally incompatible with the older lenses. Nikon chose to stay with a compatible mount and the mechanical linkages.

I wasn't exactly aware of the total history, but do know the differences and that there is both mechanical and electrical in the Nikon lenses. I've had plenty of practice guestimating my aperture for some time :-) Thanks for the responses. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I've hung this long....

BIggest problem is No Metadata from Optitek mount.

It's a dumb mount with a good lock and replaces iris control of all Nikon lenses with it's own "iris" control.

On a Nikon G lens it's hard to know the FStop. You are essentially "guestimating" the stop or apeture.

I know this is a solid mount and it works well, but it lacks electronic "modern" features.

The entire digital future depends on metadata.

This proclamation sounds a little overwrought. :-) I'm not so sure the entire future depends on lens metadata, David. It's nice and all, but most of the PL lenses in the world don't have it and they will see a lot of use for some time to come.
