  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Built in ND device for your camera: ND Slide

Douglas,

If you are looking for input, the one thing I would build into the design is an easy way to pull it apart to clean and some sort of gasket or seal at the top for both potential light leak and dirt, etc.

Since I use all nikon mount lenses with some rear focusing Leica R conversions as well I would be happy to demo/test a prototype for you.

David

Well, I will have two ND Slides for testing in the next few weeks. They will be installed in Long Valley's Posilock Nikon mount.

But, my question is, Gunliek and David (and anyone else who wants one) - where is the deal breaker?

What I mean is, would you buy this in my Posilock Nikon mount? Would it have to be in Red's DSMC mount before you'd buy it? The Posilock offers manual control of iris for G Series lenses via the 35 pitch/0.8 gear.

Same question for Canon users - would an all manual Canon mount with no iris control work for you, or would the ND Slide have to be in Red's DSMC mount? Here the problem is worsened as there is no iris control in manual Canon mounts.

I've been using mine and I think it's something that you'd never want to give up once you have it.

I tend to agree with Satsuki Murashige. A setup like this will introduce back focus issues. Especially when double filters are in use. It may not be noticeable using longer glass, but it could bite you in the ass when switching to wider lenses.

the electronic mount is nice but if using vintage or older dumb mount lenses there is nothing in the FW that lets me insert the lens metadata into the file. This is important when it come to stills work were the exfi data is used to profile lens corrections, etc.

the posilock looks like a solid piece of kit and I would look seriously at it for a B camera and maybe swap it out on some shoots. The g lens Iris gear could be handy for moco work, but I am experimenting with gearing some variable ND filters for timelapse work. It's definitely a plus to have the glens gear, but I don't use any G lenses at the moment.

the big concern for me would be my rear focusing leicas converted to Nikon. I had to shave some of the inside of my mount so that all of my lenses would fully focus and that is the design of the red Nikon mount. I'd have to really try it out.

Basically, realiable, good lock, G extras are all pluses and the electronic portion is less of a factor for me personally.

David - perhaps you could post some profile photos of your rear focusing Leicas? It sounds to me like they couldn't be used with the ND Slide.

hm. for ef glass, the iris control needs to be in the mount, but i'll probably just buy a variable ND for that. to me this would be a good reason to add a nikon mount to my kit. as long as i don't lose iris control, i am pretty happy. and i don't really feel like modding the red canon mount.

to me: this with your nikon mount sounds like a good thing....

and a good reason to get some of that manual nikon mounted glass...

For whatever it's worth, none of my Contax glass has rear protruding elements - looks like they'd all work.

However, I do have two vintage Standard Primes converted to EOS (a 16 T2 and 24 T2), and both of these DO have protruding elements, and almost certainly wouldn't work (RP Lens measured the protrusions and also determined they wouldn't be safe to use on Motion Mount either).

I figure Douglas the more info you have, the better!

Love what you're doing and thinking with this project.

best.

this seems like filling a huge "hole" in a lot of RED vs xxxx camera solo-operator issues.

what is a ballpark price for nikon mount + filtertray and say 6/9

the IR side of things isn't much of an issue on dragon

Doug,

This is awesome. If you can make it work with the RED canon electronic mount that would be huge....suddenly you have the ultimate gimbal companion....you get to use light weight built in ND and still can use your electronic lenses for remote focus and iris with an App like foolcontrol....or use fully manual lenses when needed. I don't care if it voids the red warranty on the canon mount...it definitely would be worth it.

Yes, Would love to have one with Red OEM DSMC Canon Mount!

Douglas I'd recommend making TWO EOS versions - one electronic, and one "dumb". For those of us who don't need electronic control of aperture and focus, spending less for the dumb mount would make sense, and be appealing.

I'd like to do a mod to Red's EOS and Nikon mounts, but first I have to examine them to see if it's possible. There might be locking/release mechanisms or electronic components in the way, or the slot may cause structural issues.

Anyone want to send me one of these mounts so I can examine it?
