In putting together a RED-One package, what do the terms "Build_ _" mean EXACTLY?

On the RED website they have many different "builds" they are talking about, and I have not been able to clarify exactly what they mean and what constitutes each "build".

I assumed that it meant just "how you put your package together". But, since they have given each "build" a number already, that does not make sense.

Thanks.

i don't have a RED, but am assuming its essentially the same thing as firmware. I am just guessing though.

Several DP's I have rented to absolutely insist on Bulid 21 and so I have to roll the firmware back to B21 before pick-up. I couldn't tell you why this is except perhaps a matter of personal preference or past bad experiences with Beta Builds. In other words, they've found a version they are comfortable with, familiar with and gives them predictable results. I also know designers that are still using Photoshop CS3 because they know it and their workflow doesn't require new features of CS4 or CS5.

For the reason why they call it a "build," see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_build

You'll see this often with computer programs, as in "Version 3.1 Build 193"

The specific firmware builds currently existing for the RED ONE will not apply to the Scarlet as they are made just for the RED ONE.

The Scarlet will have its own unique firmware, and it is quite likely that after the camera is released, RED will from time to time improve the firmware and create a new build that you'll be able to download to update your camera.

Just think of firmware builds as new versions of computer software running on your camera.
