Note: I realize I made an error with the thread title. It is not a system, but the PC that is $1500.

Generally, it is a norm to expect hardware requirements to steepen with new software. However, there Is a current trend in the software industry which calls for efficiency. Whether it be OS – Windows 7 / Snow Leopard, games – Crysis / Crysis 2 or NLE software – Premiere Pro CS4/CS5, the new software actually performs faster on same hardware. Relevant to our discussion, Premiere Pro CS5, especially, is an incredible software when it comes to performance. MPE works much faster even without a GPU. Along with CUDA, we can see inconceivable performance boosts – anywhere between 5x to 100x.

We no longer need expensive dual-CPU server machines. In fact, server machines have traditionally always been poor value for post-production purposes.

Despite all the power provided by the 2 x Xeon X5680 system, it is on average only about 25% faster than a single Core i7 980X. In fact, for CS4, it is often about the same or slower than the Core i7! But the gains from CS4 to CS5 are stunning. A 22-45 minute process now takes 1 minute. A 4 minute render now takes less than 30 seconds. CS5 is a game-changer in every which way.

Based on all these developments and quirks, I believe it is possible to build a realtime 4K R3D editing and post-production system, with Blu-ray authoring capabilities for under $1500. I am building an additional system myself, and thought I would share my research with RED users. This can apply for a backup machine, a second unit, if you simply don’t want to spend tens of thousands on your post production system, or if you are a hobbyist with a limited budget.

Now, let’s be clear – No, this system will not debayer 4K R3D streams in real-time. But it will allow for smooth and flexible editing, grading and post-production of 4K R3Ds – with real-time previews on an external monitor. Because Premiere Pro CS5 (or even Sony Vegas Pro 9.0e 64-bit) is so efficient, it is possible to natively edit R3Ds even on laptops from 2007. Or today's $300 systems, by sufficiently dropping the debayer detail and preview resolution, and waiting hours for the final renders. But that could test your patience. This system won’t. The target is to enable a native 4K workflow, and comprehensively outperform the new August 2010 $2500 Mac Pro. It is also intended to be a 100% native and lossless workflow, with no lossy codecs involved.

Let’s start with the vital components, along with my explanation for my choice:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T. Now, the cheapest Intel six-core (i7 970) costs $900. The cheapest AMD six-core, however, is only $200. It is slower, much slower. It will only perform at 65%-70% of the Intel on average. However, 70% performance at less than 25% the price is damn good value. The reason why it is so cheap is because very few applications actually utilize all six cores effectively. Luckily for us, the likes of Premiere Pro CS5 and Sony Vegas x64 have been optimized for multi-core. Motherboard: My first choice was a $100 880G motherboard. But I ended up choosing what I thought was a great deal. 5 full-sized PCI-e slots, USB 3.0, eSATA, it seems to have everything I need. And it is an enthusiast class board. Yes, I know it is “Open Box”, so you may want a different option. There are several top class AM3 motherboards in the $100-$175 range.

GPU – Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1GB. Nvidia’s first three GTX 400 (465, 470 and 480) products thus far have been quite terrible. However, this is the big exception. AMD has overtaken Nvidia for market share, and this has caused Nvidia to go in panic mode and massively underprice their new GPU, GTX 460. Good for us. At $230, you can’t go wrong with the GTX 460. I chose the more expensive 1GB version as it makes CUDA support on Adobe CS5 possible with the mod.

Storage – 2 x 2TB WD AV HDD. You can work them separately, in RAID0 or RAID1, whichever suits you best. The new generation of 500GB platter 2TB HDDs will hit stores in August, if you want to wait.

Case/PSU – Antec. None of it is glossy, but highly functional from a trusted brand. The whole system is likely to use about 320W at worst case scenario, and 400W with overclocking. Considering inefficiencies and future upgrades (though, efficiency is the theme for next-gen hardware as well), 620W is plenty headroom.

You will need an OS – my suggestion is Windows 7 Home Premium OEM. Of course, if you are planning several major upgrades in the recent future, might as well pay the extra $50 and go for the full version.

Coolers, input devices, misc – Let’s give it $150. It is possible you will save some here. It could also go over if you wish to add a high quality sound card.

These are all from the most popular E-tailer. You could get bargains if you look around.

Along with this, two monitors would go well - one for editing, a smaller one for previewing. And Adobe CS5. You don't necessarily need everything in Production Premium, so choose wisely. If you are on a tight budget, Vegas Pro 9.0e 64-bit is an excellent option too, and can be had for as little as $400.

I am not going to mention overclocking for now, but I do plan to do it. And 1055T is very overclockable. If you have never built a PC before, and are skeptical, trust me when I say we have all been there. All these components have their own warranties, and a modern PC is remarkably simple to assemble. It would take an hour to assemble, an hour or two to install software, and we are set.

Your 6 core processor doesn't sound like the Thuban model, is that correct? I thought it was more expensive but I could be mistaken. I'm working from memory here so forgive any misstatements.

I'm looking at a similar system but with the Thuban, I already have a 3 core Athlon (that will hopefully unlock a 4th core if I got lucky and received one based on the Deban platform) almost assembled, and though I don't understand the process, I get the idea that the Thuban processor will allow the two machines to work together as 1. If correct, this will give me the flexibility of working with one machine for minor stuff and using them together for heavy lifting. Even assembling 2 machines should be less expensive than going the Intel route and could possibly give me close to the same performance?

EDIT: Is CS5 processor-brand agnostic?

Also, thanks for the point towards the 10x LG Blue-Ray burner. I was looking at the 12x Lite-On one, but it doesn't have LightScribe.

I've been looking to upgrade my mac for a while, but was underwhelmed by Apple's latest offering.
So the solution is to buy a used, cheap, newer mac than the one I own, to run Final Cut, and build a cheap, fast PC to run CS5.
 
After some thinking, I have been leaning towards the Phenom II X6 1090T. It is 3.2 GHz - 400 MHz more than the 1055T. It costs $300. Compared with the 1055T, that is 50% more for 15% the speed bump. However, spread out over an entire $1500 system, it makes a lot more sense. It has an unlocked multiplier too.

Dave, I strongly suggest going for an LGA 1156 platform and the Core i7 870. It is 2.93 GHz and more power efficient than i7 920. It has its downsides, but many of them wouldn't be a big deal for us.

GTX 480 is only 25% faster than the GTX 460, costs more that twice as much, uses twice as much power, runs obnoxiously hot and loud. It just isn't a good product.

It is a Thuban model - just a slower, cheaper one. There are two right now 1055T and 1090T. More are coming soon - 1035T at $175 or so, and 1075T at $250.

The Athlon 3 core could unlock to a 4th core as it is a quad core with one core disabled. You will find that an Athlon quad core is "good enough" for editing 4K natively. You just need to drop your preview resolution a bit - but it is good enough for cutting decisions.

I am not sure what you mean by "work together as one". Vegas Pro has a very useful "Network render" feature. It can combine two PCs to simultaneously render a single project. It works wonders, maybe you mean something like that? Unlike GPUs - which rely heavily on drivers and proprietary technology - CPUs react much lesser to different apps. That said, while AMD does very well at editing, it is smashed by a similarly-priced Intel when it comes to rendering your project, thanks to SSE 4.1. A Core i7 870 + LGA 1156 is an alternative worth considering. MPE with CUDA is a great neutralizer, however, where the bottleneck shifts to the GPU in many processes. In other video related applications as Lagarith encoding, x264 encoding, FFT3d denoising etc. AMD provides stellar results, thanks to its core count advantage. Base your decision on what software you use, and your method of working. If you do almost everything within CS5 and continuously keep rendering previews/intermediates, get an Intel Core i7 870 + LGA 1156 - no question. Personally, I use a number of software, and my choice for NLE is still Sony Vegas Pro. I only render once at the end of the project too. For me, the AMD X6 is the better choice. It also offers the possibility of an upgrade line to next-gen Bulldozer. Of course, the Core i7 980X is the overall king by far, but then, it costs $1000.

Yeah, this is what I get for relying solely on memory before posting. Back when I first read the overview below, I was thinking two machines but they obviously were referring to two OS.
AMD Phenom II processors also offer support for Virtualization Technology. You can run virtual environments on one system with ease, allowing you to use legacy programs on a separate operating system.
 
I built a system with a EVGA X58 motherboard, an I7-930 and 12 gigs of quality ram, I was able to finde a reasonable deal on a gtx285 videocard. This system flys and also has an advantage to some in that the parts are "hackintosh" compatable should anyone want to go down that road and install snow lepoard to use FCP. I have tried both the Mac OS and windows 7 business and find both to run perfectly stable but the mac OS was a pain to get running so if your not the techy type this may not be a good option for you. Once you get it it is fine. I have buily many PC's over the years that we have used in business with excellent results. I you need a hand drop me a note, I will help if I can

I am warming to the idea of two 460's in SLI...anyone try that yet?

The mother board and power supply need to be SLI approved, Nvidia has a list on the web site....

That is a pretty incredible overclock. 810 MHz does sound good, and I would wager at such clock speeds it would be giving the GTX 480 a run for its money. Certainly, it will edge past the GTX 470. It's good value too. Thanks for the find! Will try to check up some reviews on the Galaxy 460.

As for SLI, it is good value for gaming. However, for CUDA applications, SLI hasn't yet scaled well. Perhaps it will in future drivers, I don't know. It is best to just buy one for now. The good news is that all (at least most) Intel 5 series motherboards with multiple PCI-e are both SLI and Crossfire capable. AMD boards, however, are CF only. And power supply doesn't require the "SLI badge". Just make sure it has enough power and power connectors.

Let's hope Adobe start using a more common/open standard than CUDA soon. It is a shame those AMD GPUs are unsupported right now.

Ah, those might be some of the surplus stock Nforce motherboards. Nvidia stopped making motherboard chipsets a year or more back. For Intel, they hand out SLI licenses and a NF200 chip, for AMD, well, they have nothing. I am not sure how the Nforce chipsets supporting AMD processors hold up to the 2010 generation AMD 800 series chipsets. Do note 980a are chipsets based on 780a, which are from way back in 2008. Something tells me they aren't really up to scratch with the latest AMD 800 chipsets. Pretty sure they don't officially support Phenom II X6 either, though maybe it is possible with a firmware update. Same goes for modern technologies like SATA III, eSATA or USB 3.0 - I don't think you will find them on this motherboard with a southbridge from 2008.

If you are going for the GTX 460 - unlike the other GTX 400 cards, it only supports up to 2-way SLI.

Yeah, only did a search for AMD and SLI and this board came up. But on further investigation, it seems the board is still a hot seller. The reviewers do complain about having to flash the BIOS to make it Hex-core ready, but most of those complaints were from early June backwards, so it's possible the boards are shipping with the updated BIOS now. I think I remember reading that one reviewer was running two '460s in SLI and seemed pleased. As you suggest, the best solution would be a dual SLI instead of the triple, due to the option of assigning 12 x, 12 x, then 0 x to the three

I see, if the reviews say it runs OK and you really need SLI on an AMD board, then its the only option I guess. Can't be the GTX 460 in tri-SLI as it has only one SLI connector, I think. So, that is a max of two GTX 460s in SLI possible.

Don't be too caught up with the lanes. There are many reviews that have shown that the bandwidth difference between 16x and 8x doesn't really affect much, until you hit the highest resolutions (2560x1600) and heavy AA and other IQ. I am still unsure as to whether CUDA really accelerates in SLI for CS5.

ATI can't move to CUDA - it is proprietary. Unless Nvidia sells a license, which they probably won't, considering CUDA (along with workstation graphics) is one of Nvidia's last strongholds. ATI have their own alternative, Stream but they promote open standards. Eventually, of course, we are going to move to more common standards, whether it be OpenCL, DirectCompute or something else. CUDA is only a temporary solution. But, yes, Adobe will surely support ATI in the future. It's a matter of when.

Single card CUDA will run just fine on an AMD machine, no probs there. Nvidia also disables using Nvidia + ATI cards on the same machine. A lot of people started doing just that - use an ATI card for gaming, a cheap Nvidia card for CUDA/PhysX. But they disabled it on the driver level. However, there's a recent beta out there in which they made the "mistake" of allowing an Nvidia + ATI combination. They have since "fixed" their "error". I just wish Nvidia would stop playing around.

I agree with Pietro. With hard drives so cheap these days, 3 2TB HDDs in RAID5 is a good option. If you get a good deal, they will cost as less as $300.
