  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nothing fancy. I am thinking a mac mini with an external red rocket.

Also, when does the Intel processor come into. Is it needed for ingesting as well as editing? Is it possible to download the footage from a redmag or drive to an Intel Mac, and then edit it on a PowerPC tower?

I would go with a Macbook Pro, a used single slot expansion chassis such as the Mlogic http://www.mlogic.com/products/mlink-r and a Battle Tested Rocket http://www.red.com/store/products/red-rocket-battle-tested


Also, the iMac 5K might not even need it. You could put the money right into that. I haven't had a chance to test it yet to see what kind of performance for playback and transcodes with Red One footage. I'm using it on a movie shooting with Alexa Mini and ProRes and it handles that just fine but I'll see if I can get some Red test footage in there tonight and see what speeds I get. What apps will you be using? Redcine X? Resolve?

The 5K iMac is a beast. I would go that route, plus it includes a monitor, a great one.
 
Thanks for the info Steve and Brody. I will def look into the iMac or a used MacBook Pro. I already have an external Redrocket.
 
Something to note about the iMac 5K 2015. If you intend to use it in a mobile setup, it does not come standard with removable stand. So if you want to put a different kind of VESA mount on the back you have to order the one that allows that. I missed that in my research. So, I've had to come up with a different kind of mounting system.

Also, the 27" is obviously big, so keep that in mind too if you need to make it part of a cart or travel around with it a lot. I got the Tenba case which costs some change but is light, yet strong to travel around with the iMac.

For ultra portability, I would go with maxed out 15" MBP Retina.
 
I have decided to use Mac mini (3 ghz, 16gb ram, 1tb solid state drive) with a HP 17" monitor in a pelican case. Grieve 1tb externals for backup. Maybe a ups later. A case fan to cool the box.
Thanks for the heads up on the monitor mount. I am simply attaching the monitor with heavy duty Velcro.
