  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 4 is almost here....

Please do not get rid of useful menus and turn this into an Apple product. Simplified menus have to be optional, please!!

I'm so sick of everything from self-checkout at Walmart to ATMs to my smartphone being 1/10000th as useful as they could be because people are morons.

/rant, sorry

of course of course of course... optional for sure.

Jarred,

Will it be possible to do 5K 2:1 at 96fps at 8:1 on 512Gb cards in Build 4? I can't find the current compression at 5K 2:1 96fps on 512Gb card. We recently shot on 512Gb cards for an Anamorphic project. We were able to do 48fps at 4:1(3296x2700). That's essentially 8:1 at 96fps for Anamorphic projects.

All this talk of 'Dumb' menus has put in my mind the image of a roll of film bouncing up and down with a speech bubble saying "It looks like you're trying to make a movie"..........

And i thought my Scarlet is already easy to handle. Really, everything is logical and works like i expect it, i never needed a manual so far. And i was a newbie when i got my RED! It didn't took much time to get used to it, i liked it from the beginning.

All this time, i thought this already is a simplified version of a fullfeatured cinema-camera and now people are asking for dumbed down menus... Hehe.

And then the whole customization-options, honestly, i'm not missing much here. Great job so far.

Short cuts , short menus and long menus are all excellent ideas especially when the need for speed is a must in doc filmmaking.

Well designed products should not need a users' manual, or not much of one. The only thing I ever needed to actually look at in the manual for the RED One was the false-color exposure scale. And that changed once or twice over time, too, if memory serves. It was deemed too complex I think and we now have "exposure check". Same thing, but not so many colors to decipher.

I honestly don't think I've read any of the EPIC operations guide. Had my M well before any such guide existed anyway and I think I had the X before the guide too....

When it all comes down to it, you either understand the principles of using a camera and exposure or you don't. If you do, it doesn't take long to learn the primary operations of the camera. Where people seem to need the most help with shooting RED is not in the menus or camera operation. It's in the little nuances of exposure and how to squeeze the most out of this platform. Then what do we do with our acquired images in post? How do we balance and color correct, sharpen, process and output with the best quality and all that. Using the camera? That's the easy part. Of course, it still takes a talented eye to acquire good images consistently. That goes for any camera.

Speaking of dumb users, I must admit that it's been more than once that I forgot to select the 'factory' Black Shade in the calibration menu after having shot some night time time-lapse at 1FPS and 1/2 second+ exposure.
The result of this dumb mistake is colorful 'Xmass tree lights' ( pixels ) in the picture that ruin the shoot.

I am hoping that the new firmware might at least warn the user if the blackshade is 'way off' for the exposure you are shooting with, to avoid my forgetful mistake.
The new intervalometer will have more users doing long exposure work now as well.
Should be easy to add, I would think.

Can't wait to try the newest features just added, THANKS !

Take a close look at the screenshot Jarred posted. There is a new status entry on the bottom:

The Incredible hulk, the new module looks very useful for its size, no more Pro I/O for an extra monitor. All the the updates are going to be awesome, could have used the flip option many times in the past month, and then long exposure timelapses!! This update makes my SLR useless, as I have everything in one camera now.

Very exciting! Thanks guys!

There will be quite a few happier steadicam operators because of the image flip&flop.

thank you!
