  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 4 is almost here....

I asked a DP the other day, why don't you use the EPIC?
he siad...
"I don't even know how to turn the thing on let alone understand the ridiculously complex menu system, Alexa is so much easier"
Well he is right on that point...

Thanks Jarred

every consumer p&s or dslr now comes with a 200 page manual and i don't know 90% of the menus on my canons....there is nothing difficult about the red interface, just a lot of options and a lot of different ways to access them...nothing wrong with that at all....
could it be cleaner and faster? yes, of course....that is what software upgrades are for....
looking forward to 4!

Sorry for my general question, how do you flip the image menu upside down in the menu, is this a beta software?

People need to make a habit of treating Owner Manuals like the Bible, you'd be surprised the difference it makes. I've seen 1st AC burn Wireless Focus units cause they put the wrong cable in the wrong port LOL.

Americans are so lazy and never bother it's weird to me, they just wanna open the box and start playing.

Not at all a bad habit! I wish I could choose too ;) love your stormtrooper white one as well! and please do tell Jim that we are begging to see his silver one.
Or please do an alignment shot with all of them! :) camera porn, anyone?

+1 it would be cool to see them all with the full line of Aks on them spread out :yesnod:

You mean like there is a small square box on screen showing a 1:1 live view at all times so you see the entire frame and you can see immediately if your subject is in focus without having to go 1:1 with the whole screen? Yeah, I want that as well! It would be amazing if we could "click and drag" the 1:1 box around to different parts of the screen too. Even better if it showed a 1:1 view of whatever would normally be under where the window is positioned and not just a fixed area (e.g. the center). It would make life so much easier when pulling focus myself.
Not exactly what i had in mind but that would be nice too. I was thinking about using two screens for that, one with the 1:1 preview, while the other has the full frame. Well that would be the deluxe-version. ;)

All I want for Christmas is a firmware upgrade. And Christmas is coming early! Great job RED! I can't wait till it arrives!

Heh heh.. unfortunately there is some truth to that. I kinda thought that is what the whole point of hiring a DIT was, but I guess that was a bad assumption.

Regardless.. there is no reason not to have dumb menus and deep menus, something we are actively working on.

One improvement that could be done to this or the next build is to have the word RAW come up in the display when raw view is selected instead of just the "OFF " turning yellow as it does now. It's a small thing but it would greatly simplify things.

Thanks Trent i'm viewing on an iPad and hadn't noticed. Great news

I also would love to see "raw" instead of a yellow "off" when in raw.
Also the option to have the histogram always showing raw would be great.

I expose exclusively to raw view, skidding on the edge of the highlight overexposure to protect the skintones and blacks, then switch to video view.

A lot of dops liked that simplistic approach. raw only and measure with histogram first, anything funky, such as luts and looks later. Not the other way around.

I agree and I'm all for this if it makes people feel more comfortable with the big, bad and scary camera. You might also want to consider another side module that can mount on the Dumb side of the camera; where the side handle goes. Something with a nice e-paper screen you can read in any light, maybe an indiglo[TM] backlight on it for nighty night time shooting. Have buttons and dials around it for all the common settings like ISO, FPS, shutter, etc.. And don't forget the HELP! button. Maybe even have full control over the Dumb menus from there if they want. You can call it the Dumb Module. Maybe it could have a module adapter kit so it could be mounted on the rear of the camera, you could call that the Dumb Ass.

OK, all joking aside, I do think the dumb -- or should we say "less deep" -- menus are a good idea. Keep the basics easily accessible in an intuitive way and hide the non-essentials.

As for that side module thing, I was only half-joking. I know several Alexa shooters and AC's who would be eager to pay money for something like that. Not every situation and user is compatible with the SLR style hand grip and another side-mounted control system could be welcome. There is a lot of Alexa bashing on the forums here, but Arri did a few things rather well with that camera. I personally don't find the Alexa controls to be that much easier than the EPIC. What I really should say is that I don't find the EPIC controls to be much more difficult than the Alexa, or any other camera. In fact, EPIC is a lot more intuitive and doesn't have all the frivolous features getting in the way, when compared to many DSLRs out there. However the controls on the Alexa are presented as being easy. They're tactile and right there on the side of the camera, no mysteries. I often encounter people with an aversion to touch-screen controls too and that lends a biased view to the EPIC at times too.

Bring on build 4!

This is going to phenomenal to have speed ramping and time lapse at the same time!
Too much to mess with at one time haha.

Is it possible that we'll get longer exposures in this build?
As in anywhere from 1 second to 30 second exposures?

I know the issue with this in the past had to do with dark detail masking and other sensor issues because there is no shutter or way to actually black out the sensor. But yes, I'm hopeful that we'll get longer exposure times at soe point, or perhaps the Dragon sensor will allow for long exposure abilities.

Yeah I'm just curious because it'd be cool for photo stuff. I don't take photos that often I guess but when I do it'd be cool to have that feature to toy with
