  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 30... the Crossover build.

What is interesting is when I booted up the native ISO rating was set to 800. I put it back to 320. Then it was very very dark. When I put it back at 800, it appears to be what I'd consider a normal R1 view on the exposure.

Torrie, were you previously viewing in REDspace?

There are a ton of ways to expose a RED ONE. With the new Build 30... this is what I do. It doesn't mean this is what you should do, but give it a try.

I start with ISO 800 and set my aperture to what matches the scene on my LCD (remember to click LCD down 4 clicks from brightest setting).

I then look at my goal posts. If either the left or right has any red, I hit the RAW Check (√E) to see what is either clipping or in the noise floor. Usually with the M-X I worry about clipping. RAW Check will tell me exactly what is clipped and I can make the decision to stop down or not. For example, if I am outside, everything looks right except a chrome bumper has a bright clipped spot... I'll just leave it alone. If the side of a white car is clipped... I'll lower exposure (reduce T-stop) until it stops clipping in RAW Check. At that time... I pull out my incident meter to double-check... and it is usually within .1-.2 stops. It is very comforting that everything lines up and makes sense. While there are a few exceptions, there aren't many.

With the M sensor... the noise floor becomes more of an issue. That's why you should upgrade. :-)

I'm pretty sure it was RAW. Of course I'm in REDspace now. When I play with FLUT and set it to 1.0 I can see a decent image, though there's quite a bit of noise pattern (I'm still at 800 ISO)...Am viewing on my Sony BVDM-20 via HD-SDI.

Please... always use REDcolor in camera. Don't mess with FLUT in camera unless you know exactly what you are doing (after lots of testing). You really don't ever need to adjust FLUT. It is more used in camera when you send back a LUT from REDCINE-X.

No problem. This is what I'm doing (that is, doing my tests)..FLUT appeared to act like a gain, but obviously there is a gain adjustment in the video menu, so there's probably a lot more going on than I know.

Not necessary to adjust gain either. We are moving all of these into a "Pro menu". We need these controls for other reasons and they shouldn't be used. We had a discussion (battle) here about whether or not they should even be in the menus. The compromise is to move them where they are very hard to access in the next build.

REDcolor. Set ISO. Set exposure. Shoot.

If you want a viewing LUT, we'll show you how to do that soon.

Torrie, you can't be viewing in REDspace if you are on Build 30 camera firmware. Drop me an e-mail and we can discuss offline? stuart@red.com

Default iso rating in the Mysterium is now 800? Is in the instructions, page 34.

Ahhh yes 1st thing I noticed in the new beta 30 is the 800 as a default, nice lil foreshadow...thanks again, this is the build I have been craving for, nice bridge to MX. Cheers. :cheers2:

Will there be a Redcine-X build 104 for Windows soon?
Curious about this as well. Don't mind updating firmware if one is on the way. But sounds like footage shot with the new firmware will not be usable on 101.

afterthought: will this new build footage be usable in CS4?

This build is fresh! A new camera kind of build...really makes you want MX as if you did not desire it already. Nice new STATUS menu under your project settings that shows you a break down of just about everything you generally would check before camera starts rolling, not only does this save time and avoid mistakes, you can also save and recall a "Status".

Please keep the ability to adjust all these parameters somewhere in camera. Sometimes, you don't have time to dial a look in on the computer and bring it back to the camera. Sometimes you just want to do a quick look for someone to show possibilities. Moving them sounds reasonable but eliminating them would be a real bummer.

Also, REALLY looking forward to a new version of REDLINE that incorporates new color science. It will be nice when a lot of the software out there can handle the Build 30 footage color science.

We won't eliminate them... but more people are likely to get in trouble than know how to use them... moving to "Pro Menu" will at least slow some down.

Jim

You can try hiding them all you want but I WILL find them. :)

And use them. :) They have been helpful for a quick "grade" on the camera to see what is going on. The current looks do not load and erase reliably enough for me to want to load one on to just give a quick look-sy. (Build 21). But quickly changing the parameters around is a nice option.

Looks like I have a lot of reading to do before my testing with the M & MX tomorrow morning ...

Thanks for the new release Red Team.
