  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 21...

Okay, at the risk of sounding dumb, I'm gonna go ahead and ask-- so what is the aspect ratio of the new 4.5k WS? It looks even wider than 2:1. Is 4.5 16:9 not available or possible?

Flame away.
I believe it's 2.33:1 from elsewhere on the forum. Which means you can easily crop to 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 as desired.

HTH

Paul

Thanks Paul, but can we not shoot 4.5K 16:9 without doing a massive crop?I'd think that would defeat the purpose. I must be missing something, because unless the majority of us are shooting widescreen 2:35 and such, why couldn't we have 4.5K 16:9? It has to be something technical.

Please do not get me wrong, I think it is great that RED is making all of these technical advances and offering them to us at their own expense. That's the problem sometimes with typing out what we are trying to say on these forums-- sometimes what we say in cyber space is interpreted as being insincere and critical.

I just want my 16:9--- and in 4.5K, please.

I'm going to guess that it's because the RED ONE just doesn't have the processing power to do it, judging mainly by the frame-rates. It can only do 30fps at this resolution at RC28, so I don't think it could handle another two and a half million pixels per frame unless you were shooting 16 frames per second or something...

Not a dumb question, I had the same one.

4.5K is listed as (Widescreen 4480 × 1920 pixel). So, doing the division, it would yield a 2.33:1 aspect ratio. I'm assuming they're targeting it for 2.35:1 / 2.40:1 projects.

I believe the reason is because a 16:9 image (at 4.5K) is taller than a 2.33:1 frame and either the physical size is larger than the s35mm imaging circle or it's actually taller than the sensor itself would have to be or something to that effect. Brook's charts aren't up anymore so I can't find the diagrams. But I'm pretty sure there's a limitation of some kind that is preventing them from being able to release such a mode. It might even be a bandwidth thing, but I don't think so. Either way, I'm sure they would've given it to us if it was available. This is just a way to get more out of the sensor if you are shooting in a widescreen aspect.

I didn't test the new build yet but I downloaded the new quicktime redcode and it seems the proxies now reflect the changes in redalert (except curves, etc.).

This build rocks!!!
Thanks a lot!
I know it sounds stupid, but I even get the feeling to see a sharper picture on the LCD (Mainly because my working aspect ratio is normally 1:2,40 and now I don´t need anymore to look at a picture inside the frame guides). Brilliant.
BTW I see a difference between RC28 and 36. Now I´m very exited to test RC42.

REDCODE RAW codec

REDCODE RAW codec

The RECODE RAW codec was updated to reflect the new color science.. so viewing QuickTime proxies should match to RED Alert!

REDCODE RAW codec v3.9.0 is recommended for Build 20 and 21 footage.

It's included in the Build 21 Beta camera firmware download, but is also available from www.red.com/support site

Anyone care to have a punt at what sensor area the new 4.5K mode gives you (I'm guessing something like 24.19 x 10.37mm??)

This should be a big deal if you're shooting 2:35 (coupled with the lower compression of Redcode 42 - all great for the big screen!). Compared to the old way of shooting 2:40 is this something like a 20% increase in sensor real estate??? That would be a significant leap (a bigger difference than say 4K 16:9 compared to 4K 2:1 for example) :hurray::emote_happyhappy::drool5::cheers2:

wow, we only just moved to 20!

I also just recently switched to build 20... put the v20 manual into plastic sheets the night before the release of 21 beta.

21 is great!

Red's philosophy has changed, preventing the reveal of information at a premature state, but I still feel as an insider nevertheless. Thanks Red for all of your hard work.

I've been debating with some incredulous folks. I am on tour w/ my camera helping people see how incredible Red as a compnay and their camera is; needless to say, the debates are short and they change their opinions.

THANKS!

THANKS!

I've downloaded the build, and I'll start playing with it today- I can't wait- way to go. :)

Thank you Jim and Red Team !!!

I downloaded the build and tested it very rapidly just to see the 4.5K 2.33:1 mode.
Very nice to have that format.
Didn't notice much difference between Redcode 42 and others Redcodes as usual.

Does anyone know if RED will release a 4.5K 16:9 or 2:1 mode ?
Don't even know if it' possible...

If anyone gets a chance to do a semi-serious shoot with build 21, please let us know. I have a short planning to frame in 2.35 coming up next weekend. Love to know if the beta can hold up, although I know it's a risk.

Any chance this new build solved the various SATA ERRORS. I know one is meant to send in the drives and cables... but i get this error on 6 cameras and a dozen different drives and cables. And build 18 was perfect on all of them.

Compatible RED Alert! and REDCODE RAW codec software required to decode 4.5K Widescreen images is included with the firmware download..... other applications will be updates a.s.a.p
Stuart, here it works with Redcine-X.
BTW what a great application! Love the ability to choose a harddisk and Redcine-X recognize and preview all Red files on it. Wow, I really have the feeling of a new cam with this firmware and software update. Visible enhancement of picture quality.
Thank you Red Team,
Marc
