Hi folks,

My purpose is not to be alarmist here but to report factually my experience with build 21.4.1 for your consideration.

Last week I ran into what I believe to be the same RED drive issue that has been previously reported or something very similar. Specifically my drive mounted, and after formatting on camera under the aforementioned build, I received the "formatted successfully" message per usual, but the drive appeared in the main menu as unformatted. Subsequent formatting attempts yielded identical results.

After a power cycle the drive wouldn't mount on camera at all.

The drive mounts fine via FW on a computer however, can be formatted, and appears normal in all regards.

Subsequently I attempted to format in R3D Data Manager and Disk Utilities which both completed normally, but were unable to resolve the problem of the camera recognizing the drive as valid media.

On one instance after such an attempt I got the "not fast enough" warning, I moved back to RedCode 36, and this was followed by a "no media" error.

I've engaged with RED, and I'm in capable hands.

I wouldn't bring this to broader attention save for the fact that while helping out a fellow RED owner on a shoot this week, the after a couple of day of no issues with this same build, today he hit this same behavior with his camera. Our two cameras have not shared equipment except for my loan of batteries.

The good news. For Brandon the other owner, a computer format followed by an on camera format resolved the problem.

While that hasn't worked for me, I did drop back to build 20 today, and after a computer format in DiskUtilities followed by an on camera format, the drive has successfully mounted again, and appears to function normally.

Just consider this a heads up.

All the best,

Steve

Steve,

Had your drives been "upgraded" by Red before this issue? Many drives were returned to Red for an unspecified modification after Build 20 created a new sensitivity to "ESata errors"

Hello Tom,

Happy new year,

No my drives have not been "updated" in any manner, but I expect that will be the course RED and I will take post holiday.

All the best,

Steve

thinking of buying a red camera. Have you guys encounter many problems? are you happy with the machine? should I wait longer until they release a updated version?/

questions!!!

happy ny to all of you

Extremely happy with working on RED cameras.
Should you wait longer for updated versions?
I say no if you have a project or reason to use the camera now today. Get it now right away.
It works great when you know what your doing.
You dont just turn it on and hit record and edit if you hope it to work that simple.

You will have better experiences and results by preparing yourself with as much knowledge about the camera and its post workflows as you can find.
Study, read, practice, learn, borrow, try, experiment and just absorb it all.

There are websites, DVDs, and experienced people that will be wonderful sources for you to get as up to speed as possible.

Good luck to you dani

Hi Dani,

Only you can answer this question for yourself.

There is a bit of cutting edge with RED, occasionally the bleeding edge, it just comes with the territory when dealing with disruptive change. It was true in the computer arena early on, in digital telecommunications, etc., pretty much anyplace breakthrough work is taking place.

For me it's well worth the occasional stubbed toe or racing pulse. I just take a deep breath, do problem deconstruction like I was dealing with a computer, and it all works out, or there is a work around.

The ability to step back to an earlier "known good" state generally provides a way to get done what you need to get done.

The RED One is a tool that provides utility that would simple be out of reach for me if not for the folks at RED, and I've always enjoyed pushing the envelope a bit.

While I expect this to change with the release of the upcoming cameras, it is what it is right now, and if you are looking for super simple, it just works camera, or if you're unwilling to do the legwork to figure out an appropriate workflow for your needs, then maybe it's not for you.

There is a learning curve for working with raw, but personally I expect every serious digital cinema camera to move this direction in the future so why not learn now. The benefits are truly significant.

On balance, I think its well worth doing.

There are a lot of people producing outstanding work with the camera, so if they can do it, why not you?

All the best,

If i had been waiing for almost 2 years to get my Red One now, it would be a shame, because i made from october 2006 with rented red one and received mine at april 2007, beautiful documentaris, musicclips, drama, corporate films and commercials. Its my own camera and it had never ever let me down!! I read every new manual, i test and i shoot and i'm very happy with this tool on my site on any set!

Happy NY to you too, and go for it!

Red One 1265 until Epic comes

I thought the once upgraded you couldn't go back to an earlier version of the firmware?

That's not the case. There's a dividing line at Build 16. Once you have upgraded to Build 16, you can't go back to Build 15 or any earlier version. You can revert to versions 16 and up, should you want/need to. That info is in the release page at RED Support.

Hi folks,

My purpose is not to be alarmist here but to report factually my experience with build 21.4.1 for your consideration.

I usually have a 6th sens about firmwares. I was on 21.4.1, but I moved back to 21.3.1 for no particular reason. Mabye just sentimental, cannot give up old buddy 21.3.1 just like that :)

I trust this has been reported to Red? If it has this seems like a pretty serious glitch with the new build.

I had a couple of recording errors after upgrading from build 20 to 21. The camera would stop recording after a couple of seconds and the clip would just show up green. I have already had my RED Drive "upgraded/fixed" by RED and I started having this issue as soon as I upgraded to build 21. I reinstalled the build and it has only happened one time since.

Hi Shawn, yes I was in contact with Red at the time and the drive has subsequently been upgraded/repaired. I haven't used the drive extensively yet, but it has worked without issue when it has been used.

RED took good care of me.

The purpose of the post was to provide a heads up for other folks who hadn't upgraded to build 21.4.1 It sucks to be on a shoot and have a problem that you could have avoided by testing for a known problem.

Cheers,

Steve

digitalfx, I think you mean the "Red Raid Drives"

It may not be a camera problem but it is a "Red" problem.

Stephen Lovett glad to hear you were taken care of and thank you for giving us a heads up.

Build 21

Yes it's a "red problem" but it's important to differentiate what the problem is - especially after a public "warning" posting.

i.e. from the description given this was NOT a build issue, but rather a previously discussed issue affecting some RED-DRIVEs.

i.e. there is no reason at all not to shoot with the Build 21 camera firmware.
