  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 21 - 4.5k Rc28/36/42

xyz - RC 28
abc - RC 36
jkl - RC 42

The best way to tell is sharpness, look at the pattern on the microfiber pillow

no no, i think you misunderstand me. I'm asking between ana glass w/ ana mode, and SPHERICAL glass w/ 4.5k mode, which will have a wider field of view.

Oh, I follow you now- I did misunderstand you. :)

I'm not sure which will have the wider FoV- I think it will be close. 4k Ana is a center crop of the sensor, so some FoV is lost, but with the wide ana lens that is compensated for somewhat. When I get access to some ana glass again I'll have to test it out.

Shawn, thanks for doing this test. I never even considered shooting RC28. Now I can see it is a viable option.

Hey Larry! yeah, me too. Then I forget that RC28 was all we had for a while!

For a complete test, RC28 outdoors, but I know I sure wont consider it vastly inferior.

Btw, I still have that 50 year old Cuban you gave me! It sits in the top shelf of my best humidor, awaiting the day my life changes forever.

Dang, Shawn! What day would that be? You got married, had a kid, and got your hands one of the first RED Ones. How much of a change are you waiting for?

lol, well I was already married & had my Red when you gave it to me.

I'm waiting to hopefully smoke it the day I know my dreams of being able to be a Director have come true.

That's what I've been trying to tell you... :-)

Love your new avatar Jim!!

Would the jump to RC28-RC36=8 be greater than RC36-RC42=6?
8 vs 6 or this doesn't mean much?

You have to remember that wavelet algorythms have also been used for noise reduction, so it's not surprising that the more compressed redcode will look softer and preserve less of the original noise than the bigger one.

Have you tried pushing these images with a color grading software and testing which one breaks sooner, if there is any significant difference? Maybe a chroma key test?

Also, what about the MAX setting? has anyone tested it?

Thank you.

Shawn, have you tested RC42 and varispeed?

Thanks,

Shawn,

What was your playback fps like for RC42 footage in the REDAlert 21?

Cool, thank you Shawn!!

I notice a little more detail on the right tire of the van on RC42 than on RC28, but so negligent... If you look at the shadows under the van, RC28 seems to be a little flatter but RC36 seems to hold its own against RC42.

Considering the file size, it is insane!

Pushing them, even with maniacal disregard, they seem to hold practically identical, to my eyes anyway.

I guess we should see one more test though. Daytime, and completely PACKED to the gills with detail.

I wouldn't have ever believed it was going to be so insanely close.

Yes, and we need to get several people with experience to give their opinions.

I really would appreciate hearing from well versed, hard working colorists.

Use REDCODE 42 when shooting high frame rates. That's where you are most likely to see a difference.

Jim

We'll need that feature enabled in our build first :-)

Right now RC42 is only 4k (no high frame rate) as far as Build 21 goes...
