  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 21 - 4.5k Rc28/36/42

I just cracked my eyes by looking at the differences between the RC42 and RC28 Tiff's in Photoshop. I even tried to compare the blue channels and the differences are so small that in a processed, graded and scaled to 2K moving picture you wont be able to tell.

here's another question:

can anyone tell me how the field of view (at least horizontally) compares between 4.5k and RED's 2.5k anamorphic mode? Sure the anamorphic mode is 2x, but it's 2x of a reduced part of the sensor. So which mode actually has the widest FoV?

Even if there isn't an obvious difference to the eye, shooting RC42 would have to help FX plates like green screen. Anything to get a pure acquisition is going to help.

I think that what this points to is the magic of Graeme. We know here that when you up the data rate, it is like straining at a gnat to tell the difference. 4.5K to a Compact Flash card and it is incredible. Why people think they need to shoot uncompressed is beyond me.

Hey Jim. If that is the case, what is the reasoning behind Epic shooting Redcode 250? Is that because of the higher frame rates?

The 4.5k mode will have a wider FoV.

I have not shot with Anamorphic Lenses on 4.5k yet, but here is a sample of the difference between shooting at 4k 16:9 and 4k Ana:

The difference i can see is in small dynamic range shifts in detail and esp highlight rolloffs and farther right histogram areas in the back right doorway/car highlight on the right. subtle but if you need it then its there.
of course these observations are just based on the images in the first post.

Thanks for the tests Shawn and again to the RED team and Graeme for more and better options for when we need em.

The amazing thing is that I had to do 1-1 pixel blowup and STARE at it to be able to think I saw a difference, at full screen on my 1920x1200 monitor I could not tell, and thats pixel peeping on a monitor, how much more for something in motion?

If I have the disk or card that can handle it and the space, i'll take all the info I can get. If its a wide outdoor shot or greenscreen, I'll make sure I have RC42...but anything else I wont feel bad about RC28

no no, i think you misunderstand me. I'm asking between ana glass w/ ana mode, and SPHERICAL glass w/ 4.5k mode, which will have a wider field of view.

well, just comparing them in Preview, i can't tell any difference. Maybe by examining just the blue channel?

ok, I loaded them in photoshop, cranked the levels and looked at the blue channel. I went back and forth about this one and that one, but the truth is I can't tell the difference and any guess I made would be just that, a stab in the dark.

I'm still concerned about storage at this point, so I think Im going to hold off on RC 42 and might even consider RC28 exclusively again.

I assure you these are legitimately three different grabs from RC 28, 36, 42

i certainly don't doubt you. My only guess is that maybe abc is RC28, nothing to really support that, just a hunch. Can't even take a leap between the other two.

Just downloaded the Tiffs.

Thank you for the effort of doing this test Sawn but honestly the visual information in the frames is so low than even REDCODE 10 (if existed) would be able to hold it.

I am looking forward to your daylight tests!

I'm probably approaching this wrong, but if you go by pixels, 4.5k is 4480 wide and 4k ANA is 2816. throw a 2x ana lens on there and you effectively (or, ineffectively) have 5632. would that mean that shooting 4k ANA would give you about 1/5 more field of view than shooting 4.5k?

Thanks Shawn. Very interesting test. My guess is that jkl is 28 but Man, you have to try hard to find it - and I'm still not sure. Graeme is a magician.
