  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 20 Animorphic

Anamorphic

Anamorphic

1. Get yourself a set of anamorphic lenses

2. Shoot in 4K ANA, monitor as usual via RED-EVF / RED-LCD / HD-SDI

3. Render resulting .R3D's out via RA!

Done. Enjoy!

If this is a RED anamorphic workflow for dummies thread let me add a bit to Stuarts post. You should consider that shooting anamorphic on RED build 18 or 20 records the center portion of the full horizontal resolution of the sensor. In other words, it records 2816x2304 squeezed. To desqueeze the image you can select in RA, RR or Clipfinder to render with a 2x fit width option. This will properly desqueeze your image for offline editorial. And, Or, if your finishing in Color you can perform the desqueeze in the geometry room for your online.
This is of course if your using standard 2x anamorphic glass and not the newer hawks.

Stuart, what is the maximum image resolution on RED anamorphic after performing the desqueeze?

Mike,

why use anamorphic then? I mean the anamorphic borns to increase resolution in 35 mm. 4:3 format. If you shoot anamorphic and this means 2816x2304 versus 4K...

That is recorded (squeezed) resolution. Although, I'm not 100% sure what the desqueezed resolution is of RED anamorphic, Stuart? David?
You still get all the vertical resolution of 4K and shooting anamorphic more often times than not is not just about resolution. Anamorphic is a "look" that you cannot fake on spherical glass or fake very well in a computer. Many shoot anamorphic for the optical qualities such as oval bokeh, hortizontal lens flares, shallow depth of field etc. I know anamorphic doesn't make sense to some on these boards as many have expressed their dislikes of anamorphic recording on a 16x9 sensor but I personally like the look and think its great for certain shows. Plus, I don't have a 4K projector and haven't seen too many RED projects projected in 4K outside of RED reels at Tradeshows anyhow. For now, the only limitation to shooting anamorphic on RED would be shooting 2K overcrank and having to uprez later to the rest of your footage.
I'm sure more anamorphic options will open up in the RED world once the larger sensors on EPIC are available to take full advantage of the glass.

As allways, many thanks.

I love the anamorphic artifacts and the deph of fied of an anamorphic...

in Digital production is all that can make.... a lot.... instead resolution

I know I'm asking a lot, but....

Would it be possible for someone to post a frame (or a movie clip) of the same scene shot on both standard lens and anamorphic lens, just to compare the "look" of the two?

Or is there such a comparison somewhere on the internet????

Thanks.

Thanks all, that's what i needed to get straight.
So in build 20 Anamorphic mode....

Camera uses the centre 2816 x 2304 of the sensor,
LCD, EVF & SDI displays corrected / deanamorphosed images
.R3D's are untouched 2816 x 2304
RA/RR allows '2 x unsqueeze' export (= 5632 x 2304?)

ok, this is something I've been thinking about for a while. Usually, shooting with anamorphic lenses give you even shallower DoF than S35 lenses, however the reason i believe is because it's recording on an even greater surface of the film, allowing you to expose full frame 4:3 instead of the standard matted 1.85 (larger sensor = shorter DoF).

However, since shooting ana on the RED ONE only records on the center 4:3 portion of it's 16:9 sensor, wouldn't that mean that shooting anamorphic on the RED ONE would increase the DoF when compared to similar spherical glass?

That said I'd rather shoot anamorphic lenses any day if I had access to them, but I've always been curious about that fact.

I think that ana lenses don't have shallower depth of field, their field of view is two times wider, so for example, 35mm ana lens records similar field of view as 17-18mm spherical lens, but the DoF of 35mm ana and 35mm spherical should be similar, though ana lenses bokeh looks different.

OK never mind on my anamorphic export problems. Got the dimensions right. However why do Pro Res exports look lighter than what I see in RA?

The usual quicktime gamma issues.

Try opening them up in FCP or turning on FCP compatibility in QT Player preferences. It's something that drives us nuts too but we have to wait for apple to change the way gamma works between pro and consumer apps.

Thanks again Deanan. I'm asking all the dumb questions tonight. The gamma issue that has been bugging me lately is the difference between the LED back lit displays and the old ones. The black point seems so different even though the settings match. Sorry offf topic but I obsess over this stuff.

yes, true, when shooting ana glass you use a longer lens to get the equivalent FoV, however that results in shallower DoF. BUT, with the RED ONE, you're usuing a center crop, meaning you'd have to go back to grabbing shorter glass to get those wide shots and increasing the DoF.

am I making sense?

Anamorphic Experience

Jason,

Feel free to contact me as I have just finished two big Red Anamorphic shoots after the short film you visited with Mike for the Red Center Podcast. You can check out one of these on YouTube just search "Wes Carr - Fearless."

Red and Anamorphic does involve some pain but oh so much gain!
