I asked for this a while back - I'm not giving up - if you want this (or a version of it) just reply a YES PLEASE.

Here's what I want:

ADD A "WRITE PROTECT" FLAG TO THE DIGITAL.MAGAZINE.PROFILE

Here's how I would do it -

add a Parameter called COPIED with a VALUE of True or False to the digital.magazine.profile

so ... what you would have this:

<RedParameters>
<Profile>
<Type>magazine</Type>
<Version>1.1</Version>
</Profile>
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.REEL" type="integer" value="3" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.FRAME_RATE" type="text" value="23.98" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.DROPFRAME" type="boolean" value="false" />
<Param name="MEDIA.RAW.PROJECT_FRAME_RATE" type="text" value="23.98" />
<Param name="MEDIA.RAW.PROJECT_RESOLUTION" type="text" value="Full Sensor" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.OWNER" type="text" value="" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.RESOLUTION" type="text" value="4K" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.ENCODING" type="text" value="REDCODE" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.COMPRESSION" type="text" value="RAW" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.QUALITY" type="text" value="REDCODE36" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.COPIED" type="text" value="FALSE" />
</RedParameters>

Then, R3D Manager or ANY application ANYONE makes to copy/manage Red media just needs to CHANGE the value from False to True - in the digital.magazine.profile AFTER A COPY IS MADE.

The camera WILL NOT LET YOU FORMAT a mag that has a False value on the COPIED Parameter (which is the default when the media is formatted).

And sure, deep down in the menus - after several clicks - you could find a HARD FORMAT button with a "are you REALLY, REALLY sure" warning -

I think everyone knows that a film set is a very chaotic environment, people work very long hours and no matter how amazing the crew may be - mistakes are going to happen.

We've had a write protect tab on tapes forever. Let's get a write protect flag on these digital magazines ASAP.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

I forth that.. Only, i find that a bit confusing. I like switches better. or An icon that you can see in mac or windows.. that says.. write protected. you click on that icon, choose a different setting and the icon would change to green writeable. I don't quite understand offhollywood's point in terms of write and stuff. I would like a more graphic control over this. even on thy red one.

yeah for sure. seems easy enough.

also i'd like to add, and i cant remember if this was asked for before:

An Onion Skin Mode where we could load a still store on the SD card or CF or Drive and recall an image for overlay when shooting plates or any circumstance where you need alignment ref. with a parameter for opacity to customize the overlay value.

i know moving footage would be better but as a first step it should be easy enough to implement a still overlay. its already happening with the GUI so i know it can be done.

I am not a programmer so i don't know the exact difficulty but overall it seems possible.

Bad idea.

The correct thing to do is to erase the mag in the computer after it's been copied.

Then when it comes into the camera it comes up as "Unformatted". The AC has no concerns about formatting a blank mag. Otherwise the mag gets sent back to the data guy.

Using a flag is a source of added potential failure or confusion. Erasing clips in the camera is never a good idea. Just never format mags that have any clips still on them, and sleep soundly.

I'm working a shoot right now backing up to a raid and a secondary lacie drive. I just put a piece of camera tape over the sata input of the drive that says "ok to format" after i backup the footage twice. this way we don't have any mistakes. if it isn't ok to format, we put a black piece of tape of the sata port.

I agree with you Ian - HOWEVER- I have been told something to the effect that a "standard FAT32 format" is not what the camera does - not sure if this is accurate ... and maybe I remember this incorrectly - but it seems unless RED gives us a SOFTWARE FORMAT utility - this is not going to happen. The last time I tried at FAT32 format and a manual copy of a digimag profile - it did not record properly.

What I am suggesting is MUCH better than status quo - but sure - I'm 100% for NO ON CAMERA FORMAT. I'D LOVE THAT. I SUSPECT RED WILL NEVER AGREE ON THAT ONE.

agree with Ian.

The only real fail-safe way to prevent accidental erasure is to purchase and use enough cards/drives and archive them until after the project is done. I know one guy who is doing this, and I have heard of one other.

Change-over speed is frequently important to me, and I don't want to dig through a series of menus to get formatted and up and running.

Unless I'm not geek enough to understand exactly what Mark is saying...always possible...

Does it have to be reformatted on the computer, or just deleting the content will trigger a media unformatted on the camera? If so, just deleting the content without reformatting on the computer and then formatting the drive on the camera might do the trick?

If I understand him correctly Ian is not asking for "no on camera formatting", he is suggesting that the drive is erased on the computer in such a way that the camera HAS to format it before it can be used. Thus the decision to erase is in the data wrangler's control, not the loader's. I fully agree with that.

EDIT: beaten to it by Dominique!

I would like to see a split screen feature so you could see the regular view on the left with the LUT /changes on the right to compare

when using R3D data manager it will remove the contents of the drive for you which will then in turn tell the camera it needs to format the drive. That way the data tech can be the one who is making sure the drive is ready for use. And as a second failsafe or quickview having green tape on the drive can signal that it's ready to put back into shooting.

yes please

yes please

Those are awesome Mark, nice job.

I'd like to be able to use focus assist on the LCD without zooming with the EVF and while recording...

Yes that's accurate.

Erasing all the data off the mag makes a card that the Red recognizes as "Unformatted" even if the mag is formatted FAT32 it needs those files in the root directory.

The feature I'd want actually is auto-prompting format for unformatted mags. And a lock switch in the menus that makes it impossible to format a mag with clips on it. I think this is the best mix of human and machine elements.

Also the format prompt should state which type of media is about to be formatted. Normally I use a piece of tape to force this issue.
