Build 17 in Final Cut?

I apologize if this is basic, but I just joined. I'm a UCLA film student shooting his thesis on the Red, build 17. I shot some tests on it the other day and have had issues importing the footage into Final Cut.

I shot 4K with qtime proxies, which look fine. My computer is a Mac Pro tower, 2x2.66 G Hz Dual-Core Intel Xeon chip. I have Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, and have downloaded the final cut studio plug-in from the official Red site. I noticed that their final cut plugin is only good for up to build 16.

Given that I have a build 17 Red, what's the best way to convert my 4K files to 2K and bring them into FCP? My Log & Transfer window in FCP wouldn't recognize any of my Red footage. Am I stuck importing the quicktime proxies?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Have you downloaded the Log and Transfer plugin and Quicktime/RED codec from http://www.red.com/support?

That'll get you going right away.

My bad. L/T only supports up to build 16. Thought it supported 17.

David,

You can try working with your proxy files if the project is short enough (Medium recommended) --- although with a Dual-Core I don't know if your system will work too well with them.

Your other option is to transcode the footage through RedRushes or RedCine --- both free applications. It's the same process as transcoding in log and transfer -- you'll still have to go back and conform to your R3D files later, unless you decide to transcode to 1080p ProRes HQ and leave it there for layoff to tape.

Good luck.

I just broke the rule on this one. Build 17, Log and Transferred into FCP via Native wrappers, edited, sent to Color, corrected, exported back to FCP via uncompressed 10 bit. A couple of snags but worked around them. The video is up on 4K Challenge.

It works with 17, but I have to reset the metadata to default or I keep getting black frames.

Good to know guys. I'm still left wondering when the plugin will officially support Build 17 or 18 with a software update...

Has anyone else experienced this problem w/ Build 17 footage, playing back QT RED Native in FCP?

Has anyone else been able to successfully get RT playback of Build 17 footage Native in FCP?

Not in 16:9, same problem here.
