  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 17 Audio Playback error?

This bug is incredible. Every time I see another render for a new product I think, would you guys fix the audio bug first please? Imagine telling stressed out people on set that "we got the shot, but we just can't play it back right now". Repeat 25 times a week.

Are they not having this issue on the Book of Eli? What's their secret?
 
This problem dates back to at least Build 15, as we experienced it on the set of our film, "Works in Progress," this past summer several times. It does seem more of a problem with Build 17, however. What's really funny is that it happens even on clips that have no audio signal at all. It does not seem to matter if you are using cards or drives. Same issue either way.

Fortunately, in every case we've encountered so far, the clip itself is fine. For some reason, the camera doesn't like to play it back. But, I'll admit, it's a bit irritating to not be able to play back the clip on set right then.

I get the green screen on playback as well. hoping for an update.
 
I find it weird that different cameras behave differently. Stephen, you've had playback issues before B17? Also, you're having that issue without recording sound? I had one or two before B17, but with B17 it's like 50% of the time. The funny thing is that it doesn't happen really if I don't input any sound even if i have channel 1 and 2 turned on. Other people say they have no issues with B17. What's the deal?

I had a Sony HDMI monitor turn up on set - it had displayed fine with another Red One, apparently.
Image offset on the monitor horizontally with the camera on set.
Playback is rock solid with both my cameras on build 17. Only had a problem with build 18 doing anamorphic.
It seems to me that maybe the boards in various Red Ones may vary in chips or circuitry. What else can you put inconsistencies like this down to?

This "random / inconsistent" play issue is under active investigation in our lab, with multiple cameras running stress tests to uncover the root cause.

Nothing specific to report yet, but it has our full attention and we have meanwhile been able to fix the lock up issue reported with certain HDMI monitors.

I'll be contacting each of you over the next 48 hours to understand what your specific setups and experiences are. No need for camera LOG files in this case.

When I get the green screen audio playback error (which is quite often on release build 17), one trick I use is to fast forward for a second or two immediately when I first play the clip. This avoids the error and allows me to review even clips that error out normally.

Just thought I'd mention it in case others hadn't discovered this workaround.
 
Of course it could be total superstition, but I've found that going back a couple of clips and then playing the offending one, the last take, often allow it to play.

Throw me on the list too guys. I have had the issue ever since build 17. Build 16 was solid.

To be honest, I have had this issue for a long while and I have just been waiting for a firmware update to help correct the issue.

We are using both super speeds and the RED 18-50 lens, same usual camera package, and all settings are pretty much at factory settings. This issue started after our update to 17 and still exists in 18.

The audio records fine, and we have had no issues once the files are played back via computer.

So again, if you don't mind, add me to your list. I would love to have this fixed and running solid again.

I have a similar experience to Leo Ticheli in that fast forwarding and then going back seems to allow the clip to play.

I had to play back 178 clips last night for someone to record to Betacam deck (don't ask!) and something I noticed was that if a clip is going to generate an audio error message, it will flicker between colour spaces at the beginning of playback just before the error occurs.

I wonder if this bug is related in any way to the playback selection of Camera vs Clip colour settings?

Oh and Red, PLEASE make the next clip playback button loop around to the first clip once you are on the last one, to save me having to manually go back 178 times in the future.....

Interesting. I usually shoot REC709 with Camera color playback. Yeah, looping the last clip to the first clip should be easy. The camera already knows how many clips it has taken and it knows the clip being viewed. If ((currentClip == totalClips) then (nextClip = 1)). How long does that take to program?
 
I have audio record error on build 18 since I changed to new CFmodule! Started about 2 weeks after changing the module. Now it happens nearly every time I change a CF card!!!
With 8GB cards as well as with 16GB cards. Also with Audio on, line in on channel 1 with Sounddevices Mixpre (old audio board). With both: Redcode 28 and 36. With the old CF card reader I never experienced that (also build 18). Only thing which helps is rebooting the cam after having formatted the new card, which means it takes nearly 4 minutes to change a CF card.

I think this thread is a good example of how the reduser forum has become a bit harder to search on.

Awesome. I have the same issue as you guys. Am I supposed to wait for some stuart guy who isn't associated with RED to come up with a solution? (thanks for doing the work stuart btw)

BTW, search function on this site is terrible, so anyone giving someone crap about duplicate threads is out of their mind. We users need legitimate answers. Possibly legitimate camera's at some point too...

Also, if you guys haven't noticed, EVERY RED camera is different. EVERY ACCESSORY is different as well. No Patterns, just odd coincidences and similarities.
 
Jamie, Stuart English is VERY MUCH associated with Red. I can assure you he and others at Red are working hard to solve this issue.

I've had the following problems with b17 and b18, in normal temperatures

1) Boot hangs
2) Post hangs, no QTs
3) Blue monochrome LCD behaviour, and strange colours during bootup
4) Green screens during play back
5) Audio errors during playback
6) Menu freezing

Build18 seems better than b17, but even b18 averaged about a dozen reboots during a working day

Put me on the list please..
