Ok. So I've recently ordered a 6 lens set of budget cine primes, and there is another set of 4 CP2's in the storeroom. Now I'm planning for a set of zooms and I have a few questions
  1. Putting the budget cine primes (Schneider Xenons, CP2s, and Canon CNE) against the aluras and the optimos (under £25k) which are sharper at the same T stops?
  2. How do the budget primes compare with the Aluras/optimos with regards to breathing and C.A?
It would be great if people with experience of both could chime in. There seems to be a lot of threads dedicated to Primes but not as many discussing the image quality of the under £25k zooms.

Primarily I would like contributors to the thread to focus on image quality and looks between the 2 categories.

Angineux DPs are excellent. Not much different from their much more expensive brethren. Great mechanics, no breathing, good "look" a bit warm and smooth. Seem sharp enough.

Alot of zooms and primes compared in this test footage...
the links tells how they set up the test...

NOTE: For a baseline Color Correction, Kelly Armstrong from Color Playground says, we chose the most color neutral lens to set our initial, grade to, the RED Pro Prime. Primarily using the supplied chip chart, gain levels were kept under peak 100 and pedestal was left well above 0 so any anomalies with how each lens handled shadows or highlights could be easily seen and compared. This base correction was applied to each image regardless of which lens was used.

Love the Angenieux's. Unfortunately the 19.5 - 94mm is really expensive. How well does a single zooms rent (for example the 18-80 Alura) compared to lets say a 6 lens set of CP2's

Yeah I saw this... downloaded the files.... and to my terrible eyes the Zooms looked sharper than the CP2.. was I seeing things? Will be going to a do a test of some of these soon but my eyes are quite dodgy... so I wanted other opinions.

Yes..but those are the ones that rent for the high amounts and yes those should be sharper than CP2's.

Impossible to say..depends on what rental house in what country in what city's production environment.
Then it just depends on who walks in the door and whether that person prefers single big zoom over a set of prime lenses.

Here is a dealer that has an Alura 18-80 for $25,000 so that should rent for same amount as
$25,000 worth of CP2's. Remember people may not want to rent all 6 prime lenses and try to just rent 3 or 4 for
a lesser amount.

Ordinarily wouldn't recommend people buying lenses to rent as an investment. As usually real estate and stocks
offer better returns...but now there is a worldwide asset bubble and everything is priced at full value.
Lenses do seem to offer some somewhat bargains these days..but you have to be careful not to try to
catch a falling knife.

Concern about asset bubbles is also spreading to property markets, with London real-estate now on average 20 percent more expensive than before the onset of the financial crisis, and even the government in Berlin concerned about high asset prices.

You just have to go to like 5 rental houses and ask them what lens sets rent for them and if they are open to
dealing with sub-rentals and what there terms are..usually 50/50.

I think Alura/Optimo zooms will rent 3x as much as any of those primes. The Alura is like 4lbs and covers an amazing 19-90 range at t2.9... wicked sharp too... probably sharper than the Xenons... Modern zooms are crazy good.
